RE: THE Gun Thread

I have another proposal to reduce gun violence - pay the gun industry NOT to make guns. Attend:
-In 2021, gun manufacturers posted $70 billion in profits.
-Gun violence costs the US $557 billion/year.
-Guarantee the gun manufacturers $70 billion in subsidy payments next year and increase the payment by $1 billion every year (makers of ammo and gun accessories could continue to make and sell their products).
-The subsidy would continue until payments equal the current cost of gun violence (487 years).
-This would save the US $487 billion/year, so the programme would self-fund (no net cost to taxpayers). It would also save the cost of background checks, but that's pretty minor.
-The money saved could be invested in gun safety courses, mental health services, and an increased security presence at schools, churches, mosques, and shopping malls.
-Gun makers would not be allowed to fire employees - since they are guaranteed a profit, employees could still be paid at no loss to the company. The lads could sit round and play pinochle or something.
I think this could be a winner.

Because guns are evil and without them people are angels....

You really don' t see what your " plan" would do?
Make gun collectors rich.

Who said people would be without guns? No one’s talking about confiscating guns, no one’s saying you can’t buy or sell guns - just stop making them (as lagniappe, this would also answer 37’s often-asked and stupid question about what’s the ‘right number of guns?’ The answer would be 400 million).
I have no objection to gun collectors being rich.

Great!
And we can end global warming by quitting making cars and power plants!!!
False equivalence, but you keep trying. It’s very entertaining.

Not false equivelence.
Snarky response to a monumentally dumb idea that would have exactly the opposite effect intended.
How would it have the opposite effect? I can’t really understand how fewer guns would lead to more gun violence.
It IS a false equivalence because cars and power plants are not guns.
You don’t do snark very well.

Your edit:
I’m 52.
You made another false equivalence. I’m not talking about banning guns. There is nothing in my proposal that would affect the ownership, sale, or purchase of guns.

You my friend have been listening to Brian too long........ Soon you'll be talking about them giving guns away like candy.
You never sold guns. I have. I have watched gun sales with interest - for decades. I have also profited well from seeing the trends and buying and selling accordingly.
Here IS what your plan would do. I make these educated guesses with a rather large degree of certainty.
Your plan would take months - possibly even years to implement. In the time between now and then - gun sales would SOAR. This time it would not just be AK-47 s and AR15s. It would be every kind of gun imaginable - at high prices. The panic buying would be incredible.
The manufacturers - seeing what is coming would prepare for the event by cranking out as many guns as they could. No vacations at Smith and Wesson. It would look like preparations for a world war.
And guess what? They would still supply guns for YEARS after the ban went into effect - as they would manufacture as many lower receivers as possible before the ban went into effect. See - the lower receiver - the part with the serial number is considered " the gun" and all the rest is just parts. Don' t argue this - it happened during the Clinton ban... They were " ban compliant guns"....
Your plan would flood the market - with high priced guns....
.
good go.....

You conveniently ignored the part where gun makers would be paid to NOT make guns - guaranteed profits for doing nothing. Just imagine - you could shutter your factory and STILL make the same profit, and that profit would increase every year.
I think much of your scenario could be avoided with, ‘Stop making guns today and we’ll give you a billion dollars tomorrow.’
