Honestly, any respect I had for his hustle went out the window once he tried to claim it was making a larger point about how gun buybacks don't work. Not because I disagree with that point, but because that larger point doesn't actually connect in any meaningful way.

I'm an old white woman in the suburbs. If I had one of the cheapest AR-15s out there, that's in working order, I can think of two people off the top of my head who would give more than a $50.00 gift card for it. One may be a little cash poor because of his current divorce but he would make a trade for a couple oz of pot. The other guy would probably load his kids up tonight in the work van and show up with cash money. One of his kids is named Remington and another is named Gage. He's all about guns and makes the money to afford what he wants.
A $50.00 gift card ain't shit unless you are just wanting to quickly ditch it or are desperate for a fix.
I could get rid of a gun for a hell of a lot more than the buy back prices if I had one I wanted to get rid of.

I don’t think the ‘I could get more money selling it elsewhere’ argument applies to gun buybacks. People seem to take advantage of these programmes to dispose of unwanted or broken guns in a safe manner (as opposed to just tossing them in the tip).
While it’s perfectly true that gun enthusiasts could resell the guns for more or refurbish them, that isn’t the motivation (if it were, no one would participate in the buybacks). While it’s also true - I assume -that people could simply hand these guns over to the cops for free, the gift cards are an incentive.
