I’m open to that, of course. But there should probably be a scale based on the precise nature of the offense. We could start with bastinado and work up from there.

Madrid priest sentenced to eleven years in prison for sexual assault

The provincial court of Madrid has sentenced a priest (Wooby O. JO) to eleven years in prison for a continuous crime of sexual assault.

The ruling establishes that the defendant, parish priest of the church of San Pedro Regalado and San José de Calasanz since 2018, took advantage of his position in the parish to recruit immigrant women in need of financial assistance and accommodation.

According to the court ruling, the main victim, a Colombian woman who arrived in Spain in February 2022, went to the parish seeking help after becoming homeless. The priest offered her accommodation in a house next to his own and subsequently began making sexual advances towards her.

The court found it proven that Wooby O. JO had entered the home on several occasions, using his own keys, and sexually assaulted her, even threatening to shoot her if she told anyone what had happened.

According to the court, he took advantage of the woman's extreme vulnerability and her dependence on aid provided by a religious organisation.

The victim was later diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. However, the court acquitted the priest of other charges brought by three more women, ruling that the reported incidents (comments, insinuation or inappropriate behaviour) did not constitute a crime.

In addition to the prison sentence, the court imposed a 12-year restraining order banning the priest from approaching or communicating with the victim, ten years of supervised release after serving his sentence and an 18-year ban on working with minors.

Christian missionary hailed as ‘holiest man alive’ pleads guilty to abusing boys in Texas

Daniel Savala, a former missionary whose influence inside an Assemblies of God-run college ministry persisted for years despite repeated warnings about his predatory behavior, pleaded guilty Thursday to charges that he sexually abused two boys.

Appearing by video from jail, Savala, 70, entered the plea before Judge Susan Kelly, admitting to one count of continuous trafficking of persons, a felony charge for offenders who engage in a pattern of sexual exploitation involving multiple victims over time. Under a negotiated plea agreement, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison without the possibility of parole.

The plea brought closure to a criminal case that began in 2023 after revelations that leaders in the Chi Alpha campus ministry repeatedly failed to act on allegations against Savala, allowing him to continue mentoring teens and young men for years.

Last year, an NBC News investigation found that leaders in the Assemblies of God, the world’s largest Pentecostal denomination, were warned again and again about Savala’s history but failed to cut off his access to students in Texas — even after a 2012 child sex abuse conviction in Alaska. Instead, he remained a revered spiritual figure among pastors in Chi Alpha, who called him “Papa Daniel” and “the holiest man alive” and sent scores of students to his Houston home for guidance.

Behind that image was a secretive ministry built around a backyard sauna, where Savala invoked scripture to persuade boys and young men to undress, preaching that “nudity is unity” and blurring the line between spiritual mentoring and sexual exploitation, according to his accusers and former followers.

Savala’s devotees included a pastor from Waco who brought his own sons, ages 11 and 12 at the time, to Savala’s home beginning in 2021. According to court records, the boys were instructed to undress in the sauna, where Savala sexually abused them while their father was present — the conduct at the center of the charges Savala pleaded guilty to Thursday. The criminal case against the boys’ father is pending.

Church leaders had a clear opportunity to intervene in 2012, when Savala was charged in Alaska with sexually abusing boys during his time as a youth minister in the 1990s. Instead, Chi Alpha leaders in Texas rallied to his defense, paying his bond and hiring a lawyer for him. After he pleaded guilty and served a short jail sentence, the pastors allowed him to resume mentoring students.

In the decade that followed, at least half a dozen people contacted Assemblies of God officials in Texas and at the denomination’s national headquarters in Springfield, Missouri, warning that Chi Alpha was exposing students to a convicted sex offender. These whistleblowers sent emails and made phone calls raising concerns. Again and again, they were dismissed or ignored.

Some of those whistleblowers later went public, led by Ron Bloomingkemper Jr., a former Chi Alpha member who said he left the ministry in the 1990s after Savala pressured him into sexual activity. In 2023, he and others launched a website and online forum that became a clearinghouse for allegations against Savala and other Chi Alpha leaders.

The revelations triggered a cascade of consequences, including criminal charges against Savala and some of his protégés, lawsuits from accusers and the dismissal of multiple Chi Alpha leaders.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). The Altar Boy Who Refused to Hush Up

On Jan. 11, 1998, the priest, Apolinario “Jing” Mejorada, invited the then 17-year-old Mr. Gatchalian and another altar boy to the movies. At the theater, the teenagers said, he molested them. About 20 months later, Mr. Gatchalian said Father Mejorada sexually abused him again. That episode, he said, occurred at the home of the priest, who demanded oral sex from him. Mr. Gatchalian said he refused.

A month later, Mr. Gatchalian complained to church leaders. His efforts went nowhere and he decided to take his case to the courts, in what was a remarkable act at the time. He was the rare abuse victim who publicly fought for accountability in the Philippines, a devoutly Catholic country, before the Roman Catholic Church’s clergy abuse scandal ricocheted across the globe.

But even after Father Mejorada admitted in court proceedings that he had “fondled and touched” the boys’ thighs, justice remained elusive.

Now 45, Mr. Gatchalian is a lawyer and has started a group to help other survivors of clergy abuse with legal advice and moral support, becoming the public face of victims in the Philippines where so few have dared to come forward. The church in the country, critics say, continues to close ranks to protect its own.

“Despite the reforms made by the Vatican, the church here still employs the same methods in handling abuse cases,” he said in an interview. “They’re more focused on protecting the priest rather than the complaining victim.”

Retired priest charged with sex crimes could have additional victims

GREENSBURG, Pa. — A retired Catholic priest is charged with sex crimes.

Police State Police say one of Byrnes’ victims walked into their barracks two months ago, which prompted the investigation.

Now, they say there could be more victims after finding photos in the former chaplain’s bedroom.

“We do have photographs that were taken from the residence of Mr Byrnes, and those photographs are suspect. Whether it’s a person who is consensually a part of the photograph or not, I don’t know,” Pennsylvania State Trooper Steve Limani said.

The police say all of the photos found were of males, but they did not know who they were or how old they may be.

Police said two victims have come forward who worked in the kitchen at the Christ Our Shepherd Center in Greensburg, where Byrnes also lived at the time.

In the police report, one victim said Byrnes would take him to casinos to gamble, made him perform a sex act to be forgiven for sins, and said Byrnes gave him alcohol and he woke up naked in the former priest’s bed.

Byrnes also served as the chaplain for state police from 2006 to 2018, the same time as the alleged assaults. According to police, a chaplain is a volunteer position which gave him a badge, uniform, and access to state police facilities and events, including camps with kids.

According to the Diocese of Greensburg, Byrnes was removed from the ministry eight years ago in August 2018.

August of 2018 was also the time a grand jury report was released detailing sex abuse allegations and cover-ups by six dioceses in the state, including the diocese of Greensburg.

Church pastor (83) jailed for 12½ years for sexual abuse of a child in his congregation

An 83-year-old church pastor who sexually abused a child in his congregation over a number of years has been jailed for 12½ years.

The man, who cannot be named to protect the anonymity of the victim, was found guilty by a jury of one count of attempted rape, one count of oral rape and three counts of sexual abuse of his victim at a church within the State on dates between December 2013 and April 2018.

The court was told that, notwithstanding the dates on the indictment, it was agreed the girl was between eight and 11 years old during the abuse, while the man was aged in his 70s.

The man targeted the victim when she was using the toilet in the church and touched her inappropriately on a regular basis, with the abuse escalating to attempted rape. The little girl was anxious and distressed and tried not to eat or drink before going to church, so she would not have to use the bathroom, the court heard.

Pastor, former LifeWise teacher pleads guilty to sexual misconduct toward teenager

A Muskingum County pastor and former LifeWise teacher pleaded guilty to voyeurism and gross sexual imposition this week.

Christopher Riggs, a recent pastor at Washington Township Baptist Church, was arrested Wednesday on one count of gross sexual imposition and two counts of voyeurism. Court documents show Riggs’ misconduct was directed toward a minor teenager. Riggs pleaded guilty to both shortly after his arrest.

According to court documents, Riggs had forced sexual contact with a 14-year-old between June 1 and Sept. 23 of 2023, a fourth-degree felony. Riggs also pleaded guilty to voyeurism “for the purpose of sexually arousing or gratifying” himself during the same dates, a third-degree misdemeanor. Court documents said Riggs also committed sexual voyeurism from Nov. 1 to Nov. 30, 2025 with the same victim, now 17.

Peter Hollingworth a ‘sad example’ of a man who received honours while protecting priests, says clerical abuse victim

The child sexual abuse victim at the centre of former governor general Peter Hollingworth’s resignation for failing to act on complaints said he should be remembered as a “sad example” of a man who was bestowed honours while protecting abusers.

Following Hollingworth’s death on Tuesday, advocates against child abuse have called for stronger national protections for children, saying there is still a long way to go.

Hollingworth’s legacy is controversial, with many conservative pundits, including former prime minister John Howard and the current opposition leader, Angus Taylor, celebrating his commitment to eradicating child poverty and his strong Anglican faith.

But survivor Beth Heinrich – who waged a high-profile, decades-long campaign for justice over her treatment, both by her abuser, the Anglican priest Donald Shearman, and the handling of her case by Hollingworth, then the Brisbane archbishop – said he does not deserve the honours.

In March, Heinrich finally received an apology from the pulpit, with Queensland Archbishop Jeremy Greaves acknowledging “the failures made by former Archbishop Peter Hollingworth in the handling of her abuser, deposed bishop Donald Shearman, who is now deceased” in a public service.

Hollingworth was previously found to have failed to act to remove Shearman from the church, despite becoming aware of his abuse. While he was governor general, Hollingworth appeared on ABC television in 2002 and suggested that Heinrich, 14, had instigated a sexual relationship with Shearman, a married priest.

“Despite having 25 years of experience at Brotherhood of St Laurence, he was a fully trained counsellor,” Heinrich said on Wednesday. “He was a priest, he was a father of girls, but he chose to go on national television and vilify me and victim-blame a child.

“I’ve had the satisfaction of him being disgraced in his former cathedral.”

Child protection expert and University of South Australia adjunct professor Chris Goddard said Hollingworth’s comments on the ABC were “just the most extraordinary public accusation and humiliation”.

“He actually said he didn’t think it was child abuse, it was the other way around,” Goddard said. “He further victimised the victim and rewarded the perpetrators. He abused Beth on national television.”

In 2023, the Anglican church’s professional standards board also found Hollingworth committed misconduct by allowing two priests he knew had sexually abused children to remain in the church.
