Actually, nothing natural has a 'purpose' beyond sustaining its own existence, except whatever we choose to endow it with from our human perspective. The Sun's 'purpose' is to fuse protons so as to produce deuterium (heavy hydrogen) and thence helium-4. There are people in the world today - including my own mother - who otherwise would be dead, or never born, if not for the level of medical science we take for granted today, which even a century ago would be seen almost as magic.

I haven't even touched upon the immense body of science that goes into the mass production technology to make all of the above possible.
