Good idea. We could call it "Pope Idol".
... I'll get my coat. that was a good one. Pope idol... Or will he be just another idle pope XD...
Not that this has any more credibility than the whole Myan thing, but some numerologist believe that the second pope after John Paul would be the last, that he would sell the church out ushering in the end of days.
I do not know much about that branch of the religion, but apparently it is a big deal to some.

Because there are a lot of Catholics out there and when their ship goes down, they're going to take the rest of us down with them.
I'm still hoping we get a more liberal minded Pope. I'm not holding my breath for someone who will fully support same sex marriage or gender equality, but I can hope for someone who will take less of a hard-line stance on those issues. I can hope for a pope who will care more about preventing the spread of AIDS in Africa than enforcing the Catholic condemnation of condoms. I'm hoping we get someone who will make an effort to stabilize relations between Europe and the Middle East instead of poking the beehive with a stick. I'm hoping we get Pope who cares more about protecting children than he does with protecting pedophile priests.
That's what I hope happens, anyway. What I expect is more of the same. The only policy I see changing is that they may make some change over the sex abuse scandals. They're still going to tell people that condoms cause AIDS and they're still going to agrevate Islamic radicals.

Most American catholics think the church is full of shit on many issues...
http://ncronline.org/news/catholics-amer...olics-2011
Quote:. Fewer than one in three (30 percent) says that the Vatican’s teaching authority is very important to them, 46 percent say it is somewhat important, and 20 percent say that it is not important at all. Catholics also tend to de-emphasize the importance of the church’s social and moral teachings to their personal identity as Catholics. Although the Vatican and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops have been highly involved over several decades in articulating the church’s opposition to abortion, fewer than half of American Catholics, 40 percent, say that the church’s teachings opposing abortion are very important to them personally. And even fewer say that the church’s opposition to same-sex marriage (35 percent) and the death penalty (29 percent) are very important. Similarly, Catholics also see the current structure of the church, despite its centuries-old tradition, as relatively unimportant to their identity as Catholics. Most strikingly, only one in five Catholics (21 percent) says that a celibate, male clergy is very important to them as Catholics, and almost half (46 percent) say that it is not important at all. By the same token, close to two-thirds (62 percent) indicate support for women in the role of priests in the church, and 75 percent express support for women as deacons.
In Europe the church is more of an irrelevancy than that.
The church is a criminal anachronism at this point. The sooner it goes down the tubes the better off we'll all be.

From the few catholics I met since he resigned, I mostly heard things such as "the church can only regain trust by electing a non european as pope"

Who will be the next Pope? How about, what will be the next tiny cult to turn into a religion?
We've had Mormonism in the 1800s, Kwanza and Scientology in the past 100 years.
Who will be the next tin foil hat asshole to start a new delusional cult and make it popular? How about a Star Wars or Harry Potter fan?
I don't give one fuck who the next Pope is. It will be another idiot selling superstition and giving bad medical advice to women, and like a coward picking on the poor and gullible to gain new members.
