I agree wholeheartedly. My brother, a professional gunsmith, recently got stopped at my front door. He walks around with a .40 cal slung low on his hip like some friggin' pistolero. He got his wittle feewings hurt as I told him to put that thing in his car or not visit.
Besides, being my brother, I know he's unstable. (Because I know him well, not because of genetics. I'm sound as a pound.)

Your brother sounds like an idiot. No offense intended, honestly. I own guns, and much like FFF keep them secured - but guys that feel like the need to strap up like a fucking commando look like idiots.

If you have unaided access to guns that are not registered to you then the person who owns them should relinquish them immediately. No joke.

This is the brother with three tours and the PTSD to prove it. His ideas are 'off' about how the world is. Lots of people I'd prefer to see carrying a gun over him.
I just hope his soon-to-be-born son mellows him...but I doubt it.

In that case, he probably doesn't feel safe without it. I've known a few long serving military guys like that.

That's the gist. Doesn't change the fact his theoretical safety is the cause of many others' unease, but hey...'Murica.
For the record, though, I own (long)guns, too. I just don't prominently display them to toddlers in public. Fucking cowboys...

Oh I agree, reasons and justifications are completely different. From judging from the people I've known, it can be really hard to get out of condition yellow.

They are the bulwark of liberty. If a population is armed, then they are free. Well, for one, I don't think banning guns is a good idea. Criminals will find other ways to get them. On the other hand, I see no reason not to have thorough background checks for those looking to purchase a firearm. Given the number of clearly unhinged people who have killed others with firearms, I don't think how the background checks are being handled at this time is sufficient.
And about liberty...I don't think a hunting rifle is going to stand up to a tank or even an assault rifle. It might annoy the government, but if they really went off the deep end, I don't think the populace could win. Giving ordinary people access to even deadlier weapons would not be even remotely reasonable unless the chance of a sudden transition to dictatorship was actually considerable.
Protip: Don't leave loaded firearms within reach of children or the mentally unstable. I hop I don't have to say why. Not addressed to anyone on this forum, per se, but every so often on the news you hear about these things.
