Pro abortion or not

I don't understand: you quoted me, and then put scare quotes around a word that I never used in my post, as though I disagreed with your sentiment, when it's pretty clear from the content of my post that I do not.

Yes, I know.

But your link isn't going to sway me: whilst I agree that it'd be better, in many cases, for both participants in the conception to come to some form of an agreement, or at least communicate with one another, before getting an abortion, ultimately it's not his choice any more than it would be for any other medical procedure she wants to get.

Incidentally, in reference to your link specifically, I also don't think it's the choice of the woman's mother either, so... bear that in mind. Tongue

Here ya go Danny...some info

And a bit of emotive blackmail
http://www.emilysvoice.com/get-informed/abortion-facts/

Only one state in Australia keeps a record of terminated pregnancies. So the speculative 71k- 80k annual terminations has no evidence to back it up, only that it may be extrapolated from the number of menstruating women, women on a contraceptive (oral, IUD, Condom) or women who are making use of the ECP-which prevents ovulation and is not used as an abortion device

All of it. It is just opinion.

What anti abortionists seem to ignore is that abortion doesn't stop merely because it is made illegal. All that happens is that women die through backstreet abortions which is a vastly worse thing. Oddly the action that would do most in stopping abortion is easily available contraception and comprehensive sex education for School Students. religious types seem to be against both of these so we really have to wonder if they really are anti abortion.

Yes ...Just read the Amendments to the Act. So what is your point? Termination up to 24 weeks = no too much drama. termination after 24 weeks=big drama. This is Victorian law not ACT nor NSW nor WA.

Finding it had to understand what you are trying to achieve here mate.

The 80,000 abortions annually figure is estimated in 2005 and I am to understand it is trotted out for emotive impact. Since only SA has kept tabs on abortions I fail to see how the 80,000 figure can carry any validity.

I fully support the current abortion laws in my state (Victoria), where it is legal up until birth. Also our politicians aren't considering changing it anytime soon. Smile

Kichi I'll post back later.

I know women who aborted too, I'm not stupid, it's an emotional topic to anyone on all sides of the arguments.

Hmmm, uncertain of the implications here. I hope that's not 'elective' abortions! I was under the impression that Australia was similar to the UK. Am I wrong?

In the UK, it's illegal to have an elective abortion after 24 weeks. After that, it's only legal to have an abortion under very specific circumstances (e.g. if medically necessary to save the life of the mother) and even then only after signifcant consultation. This is because our law recognises the development and the medical viability of the foetus: certain physical attributes are present by the 24th week which mean the foetus is considered alive and current medical technology means that those born prematurely are highly likely to survive from 24 weeks onwards. That recognition is used as a balance between the 'rights to life' of the unborn child and the mother's rights of self-determination. This legal framework is suported via the NHS and other related healthcare schemes to make sure that advice & support are readily available for any woman/couple facing circumstances which might result in an abortion (e.g. practical advice, counselling etc.). There's also pretty good sex-ed and NHS schemes like free condoms which work on the 'preventative' end of the issue..

Although there are problems with funding for these services under the Tories, it's still one of the most well thought-through approaches to abortion in the world. Having been through the process myself, I can tell you from experience how important it was for both my partner & I (but mainly her) to have the advice & support.
