RE: Atheist Sues After NJ Rejects Her License Plate

Saw this on patheos. No doubt it's just some crotchety old lady in the plate approvals office making those decisions. Either that or the guy who runs the plate shop at the state pen...
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

Suppose David Duke put a license plate on his car that read:
NGGR H8R
Would his car get torched? While you might own the car you don't own the plate. The state realizes there are assholes in the world and doesn't want to have its property used to incite those assholes towards violence.
If this atheist really wants to express her atheism....she can purchase a bumper sticker so her ability to speak is not impinged.
In my opinion the state should either allow all speech on its plates and accept the consequences thereof, or not allow its plates to be used for speech at all. Playing a guessing game of what speech is okay and what isn't is just ripe for abuse.

If I have to look at the words "in God we trust" on money I should at least be able to put Atheist on a license plate.

It might seem like a silly or small issue but when it comes to free speech and especially in terms of being able to express my Atheism in public, I believe firmly in a give no ground approach. Not an ounce.

Heywood do you think "atheist" is a bad word?
