I'm staunchly pro-life so I basically always vote republican. However if Obama were pro-life and Romney were pro-choice(but both otherwise the same) I would have voted for Obama even though I think he is the worst president ever. I am a one issue voter in that respect. Many of my positions don't mix with the republican platform so I don't like to call myself a republican.
I didn't intend this thread to be a debate about any of my positions so I won't respond to your comments on that except that if you are interested in knowing why I want to replace safety nets with a universal basic income, you can read about it in this thread:

You say you're 'staunch' about your pro-life stance, and you say you're against the death penalty, but it's hard to find someone to vote for who shares both stances, so you have decided that if you have to vote to kill human beings, they might as well be potentially innocent adults rather than the barely-developed tissue mass which accounts for the vast majority of abortions. That's to say nothing of the deaths (to adults and children both) caused by Republican resistance to assisting the impoverished with basic needs such as food, shelter and healthcare, the deregulation of industry, the resistance to gun control, and so many, many other policies which harm and kill people however directly.
Voting Republican automatically disqualifies you from legitimately calling yourself 'pro-life'. You're just a forced-birther who cares a great deal less about them after they're out of the womb.

And that makes the OP a dime a dozen, common as dirt.
It is telling that when the OP was offered detailed feedback and fine grained discussion of the subjects he'd brought up by Isun, the OP declined but offered links to more of his own views. Social skills of a turnip that Heywood.

As a representative of the rest of the world, you appear to be talking shit.
When Obama was voted in the world breathed a sigh of relief because he is a proper politition unlike those joke ones you've all been voting in since the eighties.
I mean George Bush Junior...the rot started with Reagan.

You're absolutely right. It is Reagan who popularized the idea of being elected to the government on a platform of being against government. Unregulated free market capitalism, the personhood of corporations, the cutting of social safety nets: those are all legacies of our grade B movie actor president.

You've pointed out an inconsistency in how I vote. If I won't vote for a pro-abortion candidate, I shouldn't vote for a pro-death penalty candidate either.....but in the past I've never considered a candidate's stance on the death penalty. I'll have to do a little soul searching.
Thanks.

There aren't any pro abortion candidates I know of. They are pro choice, but they would almost to a man, would like to make it unnecessary by giving good sex education, family planning, contraceptive availability, birth pills, etc.

I think you should stop asking what party you belong to and examine politicians on an individual basis. Stop trying to label yourself and follow a crowd. One of the biggest problems our country faces today is that people are trapped in this "Us vs. Them" mentality that comes from forcing extremely complex and diverse beliefs into just a few categories.
Don't be a sheep.
