A simple challenge for atheists
RE: A simple challenge for atheists
I heard that the bible is wrong.
Hearsay is reliable evidence.
The bible is wrong.

Be careful what standards you draw, as you have to accept the consequences.

I can probably get more hearsay on this matter?

Again, if it could be proved that Joe was an eyewitness, then that would count as slightly stronger evidence as it would be considered less biased.

What could prove that Joe was an eyewitness?

Evidence.

But hearsay is evidence, Chas! Haven't you been paying attention? Anything that confirms the bible is evidence! Rolleyes

My buddy says the bible is fake and even has proof, but he is no longer with us, so you will just have to take my word for it.

And I heard that some guy read nine hundred super-secret extra gospels hidden in the Vatican, where Jesus admits to being a con man, and walks his disciples through all the tricks he used to pull off his "miracles." Obviously you can't see these hidden gospels, but I also heard fifty-eight people corroborate the story as a real event that happened, so it's rational to believe it. Much more rational than to believe that other story Steve was telling; after all, he's only got four gospels to his story!

What would be evidence of Joe the Jew having been an eyewitness? Certainly not his claiming to be. Someone else's writing? A stone carved with "Joe was here - 0029 AD"

Perhaps four people might later write that they have known for years Joe was with Jesus. They know all kinds of people who saw Joe. They believe so sincerely that Joe was there that they would be ostracized at best or persecuted for standing up for Joe and his being there. But no...according to your logic, it's not even that we say we can't be sure, we are left with "No, Joe was not there--its a conspiracy".

And if you actually knew who the writers of the four gospels were- which you don't- and they were writing from their own first hand accounts- which they weren't- and Joe had written about things that we at least knew were possible- which magic isn't- then you might have a point there. As it stands, you're overreaching hilariously.

Speaking of, have I told you about the nine hundred gospels saying Jesus was a fake? Angel

For a charge of circular reasoning, you would have to prove that I hold the gospels to be true because they claim they are or that they claim some other special consideration (like inspiration). Since they do neither, there is no circular reason.

I believe them because I think they are historically reliable and describe events that I think really happened--just as I can believe or not believe any writing ever produced that described some event(s).

You think, with no evidence to substantiate your claim.
