It's the kind of thing that he might get away with, and I believe his nitpicking, legalistic style is in aid of that, but when you spell out what he's actually saying, it's so ridiculous it doesn't even bear thinking about.

The fact that Jesus' existence as a historical figure (read "real person") is debatable to say the least.
