Beware Latest AMD Catalyst Driver

Beware Latest AMD Catalyst Driver
I've never had any problems with driver updates before but the latest left me quite the mess to clean up. Angry

I have a Radeon HD 6900 and am running Windows 7 64 bit. The latest driver Catalyst 15.7 (which contains display driver 15.20.1046) changed my resolution to something less than the native 1920 x 1080 of my monitor AND sized it so it didn't fit on the screen. It reported my resolution as 1920 x 1080 which it clearly was not. I tried switching to other resolutions and back, rebooting, unplugging and replugging the monitor so it could redetect it - no good. I finally did a rollback and everything is fine now.

You might not experience the same problem but just to let everyone know.

Do you have Catalyst control center? It has a scaling slider that might help. Though if you've already rolled back your system...

I missed the scaling control. I would have tried that and it probably would have fixed that issue but it was still giving me the wrong resolution. The CCC was acting the same way as control panel in that regard. It was telling me 1920 x 1080 when it was clearly something considerably lower.

It's your fault for that problem because on the AMD site there's a message that clearly says 15.7 driver is provided "as is" (meaning it's beta) and it won't have any support for it until Windows 10's official release on 29th of July 2015. Which is why I didn't download it.

I didn't go to their website and get it. The current version did a pop-up saying there was a new version available and asking me if I wanted to update. No mention that it might not be stable. I immediately got the same message again after I rolled back to the previous version.

Problems like the one in the OP is just one of the many reasons I never allow automatic updates for software - that process is done manually here and only if I want anything to be updated.

I reinstalled it and it works now. I got the same over-sizing error (correctable with Catalyst Control Center) but the resolution problem only lasted a second before it corrected itself. My PDFs were blank after the install but closing and reopening the browser fixed that.

Before the first install, Windows had been shut down improperly when one of my cats walked over the switch on my power strip. Maybe that affected it. The computer had been properly rebooted before the second try.
