No argument on both accounts. But I can find cute doggie pictures without facebook.

Well, you have control over all of that. Nobody made you friend people you don't know or like. Facebook is what you make it. If you don't like it, you don't have to look at it.

There's an old joke about a guy going to a doctor and saying "Doc, it hurts when I do this", and the doctor says "Don't do that".

Yet what you can't control is the amount of personal information being left on the internet forever. Unless you're very secretive about yourself, that is. And even then, you're friends - real or virtual - might not be. And every tiny bit of information on them is a sure pointer to your own probable lifestyle. All of this doesn't even need to be sinister. You just left a gigantic marketing profile of yourself on the web, for every interested party to use. It's also a known fact that employers tend to look up social media pages when someone applies for a job. There might just be one picture or one entry that goes against their grain and another person gets the job.

Working in a field that's closely related to marketing, I steer well clear. As I said, I'm not as naive to believe to not leave traces all over the web. But my traces don't come as a neat bundle at one ground zero that is designed to collect and connect as much personal data as possible. That's how facebook makes tons of money after all.

I've been through it all before, from the old MSN in the late 1990s, Pirch, ICQ, Myspace and finally facebook. I have been on facebook a relatively long time and to be honest, the longer I have it, the less I use it because I, just like everyone else I guess, have a great deal of other things to do rather than post messages to other people about what I had for my dinner/weather is terrible/relatives came around today/visit to a park/ate an ice cream etc.

I think the obvious answer to your problem is that you just need to get rid of it once and for all, because it will not stop, since you have friends and aquaintances who continue to post drivel, whether you like it or not. In failing that and you want to keep facebook, simply take down the names of those who persist and either a) unfollow them, or in failing that b)delete them from your friends. It is not that difficult to do to be honest. Good luck.

RE: Facebook
I don't have the kind of money it takes to visit every one of my friends around the world and across the country. I moved around across USA too much growing up and left friends all over the place. My parents live in the neighbor state. My favorite friends from junior high live out of state. My favorite friends from high school live out of state. College? Out of state. AF friends, out of state.

Most of my friends are very interesting, fun, funny, clever, etc. I'm proud of my choices, because my newsfeed is full of nerdy, artsy, travely, foody, cultural, exotic life. I adore seeing what my friends are up to. How's your dog? Where are you backpacking now? How's your body building going? How's the culture in that country you moved to? Your kids are grown! Where's your next concert? How's your band doing? Where's your next protest? That beer looks good! You made that cake?! Badass!

I am interested in all of it and I'm happy for my people. Hopefully some of them enjoy seeing that my kids are growing and that the oldest of the two now has blue hair. Ha! If not, well... just keep scrolling (Dory tune), just keep scrolling.

So easy. No biggy.

Hell they're just missing out.  I'm old and I use Facebook.  Where better to tell young people how they're screwing up?  And they're always so grateful.  (Some just have trouble expressing it.)

You know whenever I see your avatar I just want to rub the place between your puppy ears.  But I just refuse to give a shit about what is public and what is private.  I don't really think anyone is going to be motivated to do me harm, and if those trying to sell me products can use my info to taylor those products to make them more desirable .. win, win.

And I also hate sneaky little shits from school trying it on with my Mrs, bit stupid really when I know who they are and can easily give them a good twatting.
But anyway I can see both sides, and used correctly it may be of some use to some people. Wink
