My point is, this ain't exactly a new thing.
Go look up some of the anti-Catholic stuff on presidential candidate (and president) Kennedy. To this day, BTW, I find his defense of the "Catholic thing", that he wasn't a very good Catholic, to be problematic on several levels. But even as a kid growing up in the 60s, I was aware there was some pretty virulent anti-Catholic sentiment. Even heard it from folks/relatives and that was despite some Catholic intermarriage already existing in the family at that time.

Hopefully you're right, and this guy, and antifa violence, are just blips.
But consider that the world has changed a lot since then. In particular, the internet makes it a lot easier for people to obsess over these things.
It's too early to say that political violence is now instigated more easily, but I don't think it's safe to just assume that societal dynamics now are the same as they were 3 to 5 decades ago.
I could give one fuck less what that sicko's motive was, he had the same thing in common as the UPS shooter, easy access to firearms.
FYI the Softball shooter had no record at the time of his buy of the spray weapon he bought.
Va Tech Shooter also had no record when he bought his firearms.
Unless the makers and sellers step up and do a better job of caring where they end up, someone has to step in. Our laws suck as far as preventing the wrong people from getting them.

If the Republicans want to keep gun laws as they are so that more crazies can shoot them up, who am I to stand in their way?

It isn't just affecting their party , gun violence is everywhere, not just big cities or suburbs. I see stories out here in the sticks too. Our gun injury/death epidemic is not a class or race or political issue, but only one party loves making it those things because they put profits over human lives.
I am no fan of revenge and never will be. I don't want their politicians dead just because I don't like their policies. I simply want them to wake the fuck up.

there was a news report yesterday the firearm was legally procured after a background check, but that soon afterwards I was wondering how they knew

Maybe his wife told them that he owned a gun. He was originally from Illinois, right?

if an SJW wants to legally procure a firearm in the state of Illinois, of all places, what conceivable piece of legislation is going to impede that ??
(not a rhetorical question, BTW, someone please post legislative language that would accomplish that and pass SCOTUS muster please)

If he'd purchased it recently, it would still be databased. If he didn't, whomever sold it to him would, by federal law, be required to hold those records indefinitely (federal law only prohibits the collection of those records into a central location). Legal sales of guns create electronic and hard copy paper trails. Further, each and every legal "sks style" rifle in this country had to be imported, and so cataloged and declared by customs for taxation, lol.
There's no gun black hole of information and law in this country, whereby after an investigation it's a complete surprise as to how and where and when a person legally purchased a rifle. They can even track illegally purchased guns through their sales histories.
@What could stop someone, in any place...any of the things that ping the federal background check system. As to illinois...well, illinois requires personal sales to be recorded, doesn't have a personal sale background check loophole, and doesn't have to purge their background check records. Illinois also requires a gun owners license, which is good for 10 years -issued by state police. They also have a mandatory waiting period, even for rifles. In addition to what would ping the federal databases, Illinois has a longer and more detailed set of categories for restricted persons, unable to buy a firearm in their state and unable to procure a license in their state. Crazy, Bad Kid (not kidding), Criminal (in addition to the federal restrictions on felons illinois has a mountain of misdeamenors which it feels justify gun restrictions), Unwell, and anyone not a resident of the state.
One of those databases would have pinged him on charges of domestic abuse, and triggered the waiting period. That waiting period could then have been extended to 72 hours while the flag was resolved. When it failed to return a record of conviction during that period it would have been assigned the status of default proceed and the seller would then be free to transfer ownership of the firearm, provided that they then made record of the sale - which is available to state and federal investigators due to a standing order of compliance (24 hours or less the seller has to be able to pony up documents) issued when the ATF grants a licensed dealers permit, for example.

Checking the FBI database? Running the weapon's serial number and examining the seller's records?

One would hope, a person that doesn't think someone's political stance on guns makes them deserving of getting murdered?
