Yes, literally anything can be used to kill and maim people, the recent tragedy illustrate that. Yet there aren't many things besides weaponry with the capacity to cause injury and death when used as the manufacturer intended.
I feel that the point isn't the item, it's the operator. At a gun range, you have items which as you note are designed to kill, but the operators are highly responsible. On the road, you have items which aren't designed to kill, but many irresponsible operators.

Great, so we agree. Just not on the specifics.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'

Vehicles can only be operated by licensees, legally. This cuts down on at least -some- damage that unskilled or unqualified (or unhinged) operators might otherwise inflict. Are you amenable to licensing requirements for firearms, Alpha? Or perhaps a requirement that a person present a gun safety course certificate at point of sale? How about proof of some sort of insurance?
At present...it's easier to get a gun than it is to get a truck.

Uh, I don't think that's accurate.
I'm assuming you were making a comparison to guns, the implication being that when you see someone with a gun, you automatically suspect that they will shoot you. I don't automatically suspect that.

No, you assume incorrectly. Perhaps I wasn't as clear in my phrasing as I ought to have been. I don't automatically assume someone with a gun is going to shoot me, though where I live it would be such an unusual occurrence that nefarious purpose would have to be high on the list of motives. What I actually meant by what I said was that while someone behind the wheel of several tons of screeching metal could just as easily kill many people at once, as recent events showed, the number of people who would actually do so is undoubtedly miniscule; and far outweighed by the number of people carrying weapons even if the majority of them will never do so.
Incidentally, I only made such comparisons to guns because you brought it up.

So, most people driving trucks aren't out to kill you, and most people with guns aren't out to kill you. Is that understanding correct?

Like I said, we seem to be in agreement. Just not about the specifics. Those being that people driving trucks are not using a piece of equipment created for the sole purpose of killing. Why are you missing this?

I'm not missing it, I just don't see the significance. If I'm killed by something designed to kill, or something adapted for killing, I'm dead either way. Airplanes aren't designed to kill, but look at 9/11. To me, the significant factor is the killer, not the tool.

If only there were Some Way to weed out potential killers by competency, eh? Some Process designed to assess their skill or mental health....to certify them as reasonably safe users of Some Particular Tool.
