It was one of the most heart breaking things I’ve ever read.
If women need to see a baby heartbeat before getting an abortion, maybe we could make sure people see the mutilated children their gun purchase might result in before being allowed to buy a gun.
Like packets of cigarettes that now come with gruesome photos of lung cancer?
I'd get behind that!

Guns can have legitimate uses. When we thin out the coyote population I get a fair few of the invasive species out of the way. And our deer population would be insanely highly without hunting, thanks to our removal of the high-end predators.

What the fuck are you talking about
Quelle surprise I know more about your religion than you do. What's the rcc's first recourse when something goes wron? Pray fervently for whatever saint is nominated in the relevant area to intercede with god. When I was still catlick I could tell you the names of quite a fee of those saints.
Oh and to prove my point less than an hour after I posted originally RTÉ radio had a clip of the other pastor in the village saying (slight paraphrase) "we did what we could. We prayed".

They were in church. They were praising the Lord. He did nothing. Surprise.

I doubt 0.01% of the 200 million+ guns in the US are used for wildlife population control and management..

Pointting out the plain simple fact that you're an idiotic and gullible follower of a religion you're either unwilling or unable to even begin to comprehend is not stupidity.
For more proof of the rcc's "suffer tragedy, pray harder" you can just visit Knock, Fatima, Lourdes, Theresa's "hospitals" in Calcutta and the thousands of other places dotted around the world designed to take money off the poor and keep them quiescent.

You didn't.
But you did provide a legitimate use for guns, as if that legitimizes selling as it is done now.
There are a few legitimate uses for them... but, even those, I think should be left for the trained authorities.

This one's from a few years back, but it suggests that a significant number of firearms are purchased...(and ostensibly used) for "wildlife population and control" which..in the US, we call hunting. That's the north american model of wildlife conservation. All the licenses and stamps and tags. Even the people who buy guns "for home defense" - a disturbing trend on that count, are paying a surcharge on their guns and all of their ammo and that goes to state and federal Fish and Game. It's amounted to the single largest source of funding for wildlife conservation in the US, responsible for saving species from extinction and even bringing them off the endangered species list all while preserving their habitat (and so, the habitat of species which aren't hunted).
We're starting to pump more federal and state funding in, lately..though, which is nice....because hunters could only do and afford so much. Think of hunters as civil servants who pay through the nose for the privilege of doing work the government can't/won't pay the labor bill on, let alone buy all the gear. The end result is that we have a network of parks and wildlife refuges second to none. The envy of the world.
Legitimate doesn't even come close, when discussing -that- use of guns. As you said, though, that doesn;t mean that we don;t have issues with their sale and transfer. That issue is a widely recognized issue, not even controversial in the US. Unregulated P2P transfers are on their way out. Licensed firearms dealers are already subject to regulation...but it's loosely enforced. This isn't an oversight, or an accident, it's by design. The ATF was without a department head for four years under Obama, and has been systematically robbed by the NRA and it's cronies in congress of both the funds and the authority required to effectively enforce the law. They're the only kind of cops the government doesn't like...apparently. They're handing out military gear to patrol officers but won't let the ATF keep the same kind of gear off the streets.
Quote:A national survey finds that nearly half of gun owners (48%) volunteer that the main reason they own a gun is for protection; just 32% say they have a gun primarily for hunting and even fewer cite other reasons, such as target shooting. In 1999, 49% said they owned a gun mostly for hunting, while just 26% cited protection as the biggest factor.

I've been killing things since I was 19. I'm very good at it. Fish and Wildlife ask me to come on the thinning hunts. There aren't enough "trained authorities" to effectively thin the deer populations. If not kept in check they'd be the cause of who know how many deaths on our highways each year.
In a perfect world the thinning would be left to the "trained predators", wolves, lions, bears. This world ain't perfect.
