I've been subjected to lots of philosophy at the hands of my English professors, and indeed much of it is insightful and beautifully written. I give the scientists the upper hand when it comes to being objectively correct, however.
I've basically been an atheist since early childhood, but Dawkins' book is the first I have read on the subject, in addition to plenty of Mormon history. I want to read The Believing Brain next, or maybe some Hitchens.
When it's politically advantageous for him Dawkins claims to be a "Cultural Christian" who loves to sing Christmas Carols. He's an atheist when he's writing and selling books about atheism and he's a Christian when he's campaigning for political office....

"Sorta"? No. Completely, inexcusably, unforgivably repulsive. The kind of repulsive that makes me take inventory of my cutlery drawer and double-check the spelling of words like "bilateral orchiectomy."

It should be, uh, an eye-opening experience, if they keep an open mind. I'm always reminded (nerdily, I suppose) of Morpheus and his red and blue pills whenever such folks show an interest in atheism. Take the red pill, buy The God Delusion, see what the truth really is, how deep the rabbit hole goes...
Oof...don't do that. Whenever atheists talk about themselves like they're 'enlightened' or 'woken up to reality' I always cringe a bit. It's that sort of attitude that gets us the edgy fedora-behatted stereotypes. Theists just believe stuff that I don't think is correct, and I like to know why or if they're in fact right.
And there are far better atheist books than the God Delusion. Dawkins is a fantastic scientist, and his books on biology are great. But he's not the best when it comes to philosophy or atheism or politics. Suggesting people only read one book is creepily similar to how some theists act.
....edgy fedora-behatted stereotypes? Okay! Watch that shit!

Meh, if you met me in person you'd like me. These topics don't come up much IRL. We could play clarinet together. I have one that used to be owned by the late, great Nestor Koval (first American to win first prize at the Paris Conservatory). I took lessons from him in high school.

Yeah but you actually look good. I'm talking about this sorta thing... literally the first image result of 'fedora atheist'.

Holy shit.
My mom was a Catholic. I celebrated Christmas with her so by your logic, anyone who partakes in a mere ceremony is a traitor to their label By your fucking BULLSHIT logic you'd also have to condemn lots of Jews, who like the ceremony but don't believe in a literal God. They call themselves "secular Jews". SAME FUCKING THING MORON!
By your bullshit logic, my mom knew I was an atheist, she should have said, "FUCK YOU SON, YOU DON'T BELIEVE"
I have a redneck atheist friend in Oklahoma. He was raised by conservative Christian parents. He grew out of that belief and he is now an atheist and BOTH a social and economic liberal. I've known John for 16 years. If I demanded he not celebrate Christmas with his still believing family, he'd drop me as a friend like a hot potato.
Maybe you simply need to, GROW THE FUCK UP! Dawkins does not hate every Christian, nor was he saying he is a secret Christian because he likes the ceremony. My atheist Redneck friend John, still loves religious music even though he does not agree with the message.
As an atheist, I had attended a Unitarian Church , but that did not mean I believed in all the God/s the members held to be true. It just meant I liked the atmosphere.

To build roads, create and enforce a legal system, etc. That's the barest minimum. The fact is when people give out of charity, it's not enough to make a dent.
Are you saying there shouldn't be any antipoverty
programs, no matter how needy someone is and how little they are at fault for their situation?
