But, if it had never happened I think it unlikely that he would say, "How strange, a friend from a few years ago that I don't regularly see outside my usual bar, who spoke at length for years about disbelieving God, happened not to be walking by the bar at the moment I was smoking a cigarette"....

I'm not saying there isn't any perceptual bias Dar. But it was chalked up to coincidence. Coincidence doesn't prove/require a causal or any other modal relationship. But statistically how expected would it have been for that to happen and relate back to what Christians claim is the originating cause ie. God?
"There ought to be a term that would designate those who actually follow the teachings of Jesus, since the word 'Christian' has been largely divorced from those teachings, and so polluted by fundamentalists that it has come to connote their polar opposite: intolerance, vindictive hatred, and bigotry." -- Philip Stater, Huffington Post

That would require proof of the originating cause, i.e. God.
Asking for the statistical relevance of an event does not require evidence of the originating cause, although furtherance of the conversation would inevitably lead to that. Only after though the event was proved inconsistent with chance, is that one you're giving me? I don't mind the fast forward button

What's the chance that two people who knew each other and live in the same town would happen to run across each other at some point in their lives? Pretty damn high.

And more, what are the odds that a born-again jesus freak would wreck such a happy encounter by starting to blather on about his fucking 'god?' Maybe god is a smoker, Tacky? If he wasn't such a shitbag he wouldn't have that problem. That people couldn't let go of their ethnocentric bullshit just long enough to postulate a god that wasn't an absolute cocksucker speaks volumes.

Well, we do live in the same city, and my guess is that if my slutty ex-girlfriend whom I haven't seen in 5 years, showed up outside the bar on a random chance and I ended up nailing her - somehow THAT wouldn't be an act of god. ... but I run into an old friend of mine who now just happens to believe in god - and yeah, that's predestination. People see what they want to see. |
