Ceases to be a military really, if there are no citizens, only soldiers. Then they're just roving thieves......
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Can't have it both ways. Soldiers need food, equipment, and lodging/fortification. You want the Attillas? gotta take bob the farmer as well.)
If you want to have a historical discussion, we can have it. I can talk hours and hours about the Turkish military institutions and how they worked.
Besides, even if we do not have the surplus to actually feed an army, the people give their life's blood for the army, if we are in great peril, like it happened when we were fighting for our independence.

All soldiers are citizens. Even if they are not serving in the army, every Turk should know the basic means to defend him/herself, in the case an enemy strikes.
I'm not saying that everyone should serve in the military. But the military is a part of us, just like the parliament is, even more so, maybe.

What is the purpose of a military if it only exists to perpetuate itself?

You say that it does.
Not I. Nor the military.
You constantly say things based on assumptions.
The purpose of the military is to defend our nation from the various enemies around us.
The military is our martial pride. We call it "the wolf's lair", "the house of the prophets", and with many other names "sublime", "the sun of the nation".

Sounds like the kind of religion I'm in favor of banning.

Ah, I get it. To you, the military IS religion! Talk about assumptions ...
It looks like a Jim Jones type of religion, too:

You don't.
This country was built by the military, and militarymen.
Atatürk himself was a man that came from the military ranks, and he initiated the events that would lead to the founding of this country in the first place.

Most countries have military backgrounds, but the ones which go on to greatness do so not by clinging to militancy. What has made countries great is advancing the quality of life of their people, which is much more than simply maintaining a standing militia.
Have a look at the EU overview of Turkey from a few years ago. The workforce is in a sad way. No wonder the military is popular. Education is very low compared to EU standards. No wonder the military is popular. A social misogyny is clearly evident. No wonder the military is popular.

However, this is a backwards sort of success, and not one engineered to make a country great, but one made merely to maintain a hold on the past.
Those days are gone.
