Not sure that qualifies as ‘recent history’.

September 12, 2001. Not even then. Because not a day had passed and the bickering over whose fault 911 was started.

The divide is far more severe now than it's been in at least recent history.

We are pretty seriously divided right now, the worst in my adult lifetime. It is important to consider historical context, though. I wasn't born until the civil rights era was over and was too young to experience the rebellion of the 60's but those were extremely divided times. Some of the same dividing lines still exist, which is the saddest part. I'm sure some people believed we were about to implode in 1969 as well, but then something happened and we had 30 years of relative calm. I would like for that to happen again, but I also want to see these issues resolved and not just swept under the rug for another generation to deal with.
Why is it so?

Nah.......America has been very much united for the last 50 years or so, and is becoming more united all the time.

There was a time when GW Bush had a 84% approval rating, IIRC. We were surprisingly united in our bloodlust.

Boru Depends on what you consider recent
For a country as young as the US, 160 years ago is hardly recent history.
