Internet Utopia

RE: Internet Utopia
@Ahriman You know it just occurred to me that some time ago you congratulated me for my insightful posts and insisted this wasn't a sarcastic comment. So why are you now reversing course and asserting the exact opposite? I make no claims as to the insightfulness or intelligence of my comments, but I will assert that I'm quite consistent in my positions. I go to great effort to not contradict myself.

Your posts are insightful in a "moral innocence" kind of way.

Again, I can't make head or tails of what that means.  Don't you think it's possible that you simply don't understand what's being posted?  When I critique a post, I'm usually able to site the specific part of the post that I find objectionable or inaccurate and I can state what I base this on.  My assessment of your posts is that you simply shoot from the hip on just about everything.  The problem with that is you are judging everything subjectively and basing your criticisms on nothing more than your personal feelings.  That's fine if you feel this or that, but it means absolutely nothing to anyone else.

Well everyone's a critic. It takes more courage to post your personal feelings than it dose to criticize something.

That depends on your intentions.  I typically don't present my personal feelings about something here because in many cases they are not relevant and if I do offer my feelings, I make it clear that's what I'm doing and not asserting that I know something as absolute truth.  When rebutting an argument, it's important to base your response on objective facts and offering sources if needed (this is actually expected if you read the forum rules).  To respond to an argument and say "hey, so and so is always the case" but you are merely offering your feeling or intuition on the subject opens you up to rebuttal from others who have a better grasp on the facts than you do.  If you state that you just feel that so and so is true, then you may be excused from rebuttal because you aren't asserting that something is actually true.  A forum isn't any different than speaking to someone in person in this respect.  It's just not wise to go around talking as if you know something when in fact you are just presenting your opinion and feelings.

I suppose you believe that offering your feelings requires more courage because you feel vulnerable about it, but consider the fact that feelings are simply emotions and you are not expected to have or possess absolute or accurate emotions.  You have whatever feelings you have.  But when you assert things as fact, there is less reason to offer forgiveness because finding the correct facts is usually easy.  Simply put, ignorance is more easily fixable than feelings.

Criticism doesn't change anyone's mind, I'm not sure why anyone would think it does.

Are you too soft for criticism?

If I go around spouting off any old crap I want and no one challenges me, then its me who's getting hurt because I believe I know something when in fact I'm ignorant. I'll go on to say that if you truly feel that you don't need guidance from others, then you truly are delusional.

I don't mind being criticized, I just don't think criticism (in general) is all that important, in terms of forming a world view. I don't know if you could say I'm "delusional", maybe I am, maybe I'm not. I don't care.
