My dad is from there. I know lots of people in Illinois and I know the gun control laws there.

As someone who's actually from Chicago, I can shed some light on why guns are still a problem despite comparatively strict gun laws. To start with, here's a map of the general area that might give you a hint on what the problem is:

It's easy as shit to just drive for an hour or two and find yourself in a state that has more lax gun laws. So, if you really want a gun that badly (or if you're an illegal gun dealer), a Chicagoan can just drive up to the state line, get a gun with less red tape, and go back with nobody being any the wiser. I myself have crossed the border between Wisconsin and Illinois dozens of times, if not over a hundred times, in my life (we have family in Kaukauna and an annual vacation in Door County). How many times have we been stopped by cops who want to know what we have in our car?

More than half of the guns that show up in chicago trace data are from out of state..as evidenced by trace data from those states. Those firearms involved in crimes that are traced originally to the state were either purchased there, or simply never used to commit a crime elsewhere which left ballistic evidence. Of those purchased there, the overwhelming majority were legally purchased, and never reported stolen. These are -just- the guns involved in crimes, -just- the guns with trace data available.
So, how did the gangbangers living rent free in OLBs head get those guns? Law enforcement would sure like to know - and that's probably why the largest domestic interdiction programs in existence are working so hard, without necessary funding, and as their legal authority is eroded or even flat out rejected. By whom...you might ask? Why, those dastardly dems and anti guncrazies and antifa! Except nope. By reich wing nutters with gangbangers living rent free in their minds. It's tyranny, we're told. Cold dead hands, they say. Those terms are acceptable, and that's how this ends unless they get their criminal shit together....or is that not a very valid concern that nuts have and refer to as to why they need their guns....?
Meanwhile, back in mere reality, and as bad as it is in chicago...it is not states or cities with the densest populations or the most restrictive gun laws which have the highest rates of gun death - as already discussed in thread. It's red states, rural areas, least restrictive gun laws. This american carnage is happening out in the woods - places like chicago are relatively peaceful side show to that reality.
