But even a mortal sin doesn’t necessarily condemn one to hell. See my previous post.

To work around the Sunday obligation...I remember when it became okay to attend mass on Saturday night. Then go out to eat, get drunk, and sleep in on Sunday.

This was after they got rid of the Latin mass and added the absolutely disgusting Folk Mass. Of course, that was at 10 so there was a chance to sleep off the effects of the night before going to hear a bunch of crappy musicians play crappy music.

I actually preferred the pipe organ and choir to that stuff.

I also remember the no meat on Fridays years. We tended to go for tuna casserole (as fish was okay) or mac and cheese.

It was curious to me that these most sacrosanct of Catholic rules got changed around.

The communial penance services will also substitute for sacramental confession; just show-up, sit there and all your sins are forgiven! The 10-second (or, perhaps, 5) "confessions" afterwards always amazed me, when folks, a minority, would come forward, utter a few words and the priest would perform absolution.

I remember when I was really "into it" and went to a traditional Catholic priest, a complete stranger, and "laid it on him". He listened for my 15 or 20 minutes of ranting all of my sins before pronouncing the traditional formula, "Ego te absolvo a peccatis tuis in nomine Patris et Filii et Spiritus Sancti". It was, for me, a moment of transcendence and it must be admitted that religious faith can bring complete strangers together to do odd things.
