When it comes to attracting mates for serious relationships, my observation has been that it's often about compatibility/relatability more than appearance or confidence.

I think that's only because the looks factor is assumed and baked in before you even go on a first date.  After all, no one dates someone they find repulsive no matter how great their personality, but someone will make all kinds of allowances for bad personality traits if they're truly beautiful (so much so it's a trope in media and literature etc).

People make allowances for all kinds of looks as well. Yeah, being pretty helps, but sometimes people aren't comfortable with those they deem to be pretty and will go for someone more average in looks. Being confident helps, but sometimes people aren't comfortable being with someone who is so confident, so they will go with someone who matches their own level of confidence. Having lots of money helps, but sometimes people want a deep connection moreso than being rich, so they settle for someone with less wealth. And so on.

The problem with incels is that they make it hard for women to be comfortable with them, and there are quite a few good looking people within the incel community actually.

I'm not making an absolute statement, so there's no sticking to it.
