Catholic church loses high court bid to prevent father of George Pell accuser suing for damages

Australia’s highest court has rejected the Catholic church’s bid to avoid paying damages to the father of a choirboy allegedly sexually abused by Cardinal George Pell.

The father, who cannot be named, claims he suffered nervous shock after learning of allegations that the cardinal sexually abused his now-deceased son in the mid-1990s.

Cardinal Pell maintained his innocence over the allegations until his death in January 2023, and had five convictions for abusing the man’s son and another boy overturned by the high court in 2020.

SC priest sentenced to nearly 22 years in federal prison

A South Carolina priest who served in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston was sentenced to nearly 22 years in federal prison.

Jamie Adolfo Gonzalez-Farias, 68, pleaded guilty on Aug. 10 to transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity at the federal courthouse in Columbia.

He took the boy on a trip to Florida, where he molested the boy, according to Assistant United States Attorney Elliott Daniels.

The priest admitted to the Federal Bureau of Investigations that the child was abused in both Florida and South Carolina.

Gonzalez-Farias was also charged with aggravated sexual abuse of children and coercion of a minor, but those charges were dropped in a plea agreement.

Court filings show the priest had given the boy nicknames, showered with him, shared pornography with him and told the boy he loved him.

Petition demands investigation into sex abuse in Czech Catholic Church

Victims of abuse by priests in the Czech Republic are urging the establishment of an independent commission to investigate sexual violence cases within the Catholic Church.

An online petition calling for the resignation of Prague Archbishop Jan Graubner alleges that Graubner – while serving as the archbishop of Olomouc – was aware of a priest abusing children but failed to take action.

The petition, addressed to the Czech Bishops’ Conference and the Commission of the Bishops’ Conferences of the EU, alleges that while there are dozens of known victims of abuse by priests in the Czech Republic, there could be hundreds – possibly thousands – more.

The petition also calls for personal accountability and the resignation of bishops who neglected to prevent sexual predators among priests despite knowing about their actions.

The petition, which specifically targets Graubner, the current head of the Czech Roman Catholic Church and Archbishop of Prague since July 2023, alleges that the archbishop was aware of child abuse by a priest during his tenure in Olomouc but transferred the offender to other locations within his diocese.

Pope Francis accused of opposing reforms to tackle clerical sexual abuse

Pope Francis has been accused of opposing reforms that would seriously address the problem of clerical sexual abuse of children and vulnerable adults, while “turning a blind eye” to priests who assault nuns and force them to have abortions.

Francis promised to “spare no effort” to bring to justice paedophile priests and the bishops who covered up their crimes at an unprecedented summit in February 2019, an event that was supposed to mark a turning point in the handling of a scandal that has embroiled the Catholic church for decades.

On Tuesday Anne Barrett Doyle, a co-founder of BishopAccountability, which tracks alleged clergy sexual abuse cases, cited 10 cases since 2019 that allegedly show the pope favoured accused bishops and clerics over their victims. The cases include that of Marko Rupnik, who was excommunicated in 2020 after accusations of sexual and psychological assault against nuns dating back three decades, but in 2023 was accepted into a diocese in his native Slovenia.

“While the pope publicly condemns abortion, comparing it to hiring a hitman, he turns a blind eye to the priests who force nuns into having abortions,” said Reisinger.

Reisinger said that while some nuns had come forward about abuse since 2019, they were mostly too afraid to speak out. There is scant care for abused nuns, many of whom have been thrown out of their orders and made homeless, and under canon law they “have no status at all”, she said.

“The pope has admitted abuse of nuns but he has not acted on it,” said Reisinger. “And we have never heard a pope or bishop acknowledge coerced abortion at the hands of priests. They always treat abortion as a female issue yet they have never spoken about priests forcing abortions, despite knowing it is going on.”

Former nuns call on pope to launch inquiry into priest they say sexually abused them

Two former nuns have called on Pope Francis to initiate an independent investigation into a once-prominent Jesuit artist-priest who they allege sexually abused them, including by forcing them to have threesomes “because he said it was like the [Holy] Trinity” and making them watch pornography so they would “grow spiritually”.

Speaking publicly for the first time, Mirjiam Kovac and Gloria Branciani said the wall of silence surrounding Marko Rupnik, who has been accused by several women of sexual, psychological and spiritual abuses dating back three decades, had finally “crumbled”.

The women are former members of the Ignatius of Loyola community, an order co-founded by Rupnik, whose mosaics adorn the walls of some Vatican chapels and other churches.

“We were all young girls, full of ideals,” Kovac said during a press conference in Rome. “But these very ideals, together with our training in obedience, were exploited for abuses of various kinds: of conscience, of power, spiritual, psychic, physical and often sexual.”

Both women reported Rupnik to senior Catholic church officials in the early 1990s, but claim they were repeatedly rebuffed and dismissed.

Rupnik was excommunicated in 2020 for absolving a woman with whom he had sex; the absolution of a “sexual accomplice” is among the most serious crimes under canon law. But he was reinstated two weeks later after he repented.

France, the Vatican, and the Pan-Asian Sexual Abuse Scandals of MEP Missionaries

Earlier this month, French President Emmanuel Macron accepted the resignation of Catholic Bishop Gilles Reithinger. A few days later, the Holy See confirmed the stepping down of the 51-year-old cleric. No explanation was given for this unusual departure, but the prelate is embroiled in numerous allegations of sexual abuse perpetrated by French missionaries across all of Asia.

In a documentary released by France 24 in September 2023, “A Deafening Silence,” Father Philippe, a French priest in Japan who is himself accused of sexual abuse, confessed that he had sexual relations with his ecclesial supervisor, Reithinger. This occurred years ago when Philippe was studying in Paris. Later the young missionary was sent to Japan while Reithinger became the superior of the French missionary society, the Missions Etrangères de Paris (MEP) – a prestigious Catholic organization operating across all of Asia. A dozen Asian countries host MEP missionaries.

Given all these allegations, the resignation of Gilles Reithinger was not a surprise. Yet, the French Bishops’ conference released a press statement suggesting that medical issues were behind his sudden departure. Without a word about the pan-Asian accusations affecting the MEP, the French bishops wished a prompt recovery to their colleague. Meanwhile, the French press revealed that Reithinger is now resting in a four-star spa-hotel in Mulhouse.

The Catholic missionary organization is worth at least 1.5 billion euros – but probably more. The scope of their wealth remains secret, even to most of their members. The headquarters of the organization is a luxurious property in central Paris. It has the largest private garden of the French capital, and its value is estimated at around 1 billion euros.
