India Struggles to Eradicate an Old Scourge: Witch Hunting

The attack, in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand in 2021, was evidence that India is still struggling to eradicate the age-old scourge of witch hunting, despite a raft of laws and other initiatives.

For centuries, the branding of witches was driven largely by superstition. A crop would fail, a well would run dry or a family member would fall ill, and villagers would find someone — almost always a woman — to blame for a misfortune whose cause they did not understand.

Women branded witches have had their nails pulled out, been forced to eat feces, been paraded naked or been beaten black and blue. They have been burned or lynched. From 2010 to 2021, more than 1,500 people were killed in India after accusations of witchcraft, according to the National Crime Records Bureau.

One of them is Dukhu Majhi, who lives in a picturesque village a couple of hundred miles from Durga Mahato’s.

In Ms. Majhi’s case, suspicion fell on her simply because she did not conform to neighbors’ expectations. Villagers wondered how a “normal woman” could live by herself with her young children, deep in the forest, while her husband was away for work.

Then they labeled her a witch.

“If someone’s stomach aches, I am blamed. If a headache happens, I am blamed. They would stand outside my house and shout, ‘She is the witch causing us grief,’” Ms. Majhi said. “I would retort: Do I become a witch just because you are saying so?”
Last July, villagers chased her with axes and sticks. She ran home; they banged on the door and tried to break it down.

She and her husband went to the police to complain. Pintu Mahato, a local police official, tried to play down the case.

‘Oppenheimer’ Sacred Text Reading Sex Scene Raises Hackles in India: ‘This is a Direct Assault on Religious Beliefs of a Billion Tolerant Hindus’

A sex scene in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” featuring a line from Hindu holy scripture “Bhagavad Gita” has led to protests even as the film rakes it in at the box office.

In a letter addressed to Nolan on Twitter, Mahurkar wrote on behalf of the foundation:

“It has come to our notice that the movie ‘Oppenheimer’ contains a scene which make a scathing attack on Hinduism. As per social media reports, a scene in the movie shows a woman makes a man read Bhagwad Geeta aloud while getting over him and doing sexual intercourse. She is holding Bhagwad Geeta in one hand, and the other hands seems to be adjusting the position of their reproductive organs. The Bhagwad Geeta is one of the most revered scriptures of Hinduism. Geeta has been the inspiration for countless sanyasis, brahmcharis and legends who live a life of self-control and perform selfless noble deeds. We do not know the motivation and logic behind this unnecessary scene on life of a scientist. But this is a direct assault on religious beliefs of a billion tolerant Hindus, rather it amounts to waging a war on the Hindu community and almost appears to be part of a larger conspiracy by anti-Hindu forces.”

The letter goes on to say that Hollywood “is very sensitive about the fact that Quran and Islam is not depicted in any manner that may offend the value system of a common Muslim, even if you make something based on Islamist terrorism,” and asks, “Why should not the same courtesy be also extended to Hindus?”

Modi inaugurates $217 million Hindu temple

The temple is built on land where a mosque had stood for centuries before being torn down by Hindu nationalists in the 1992, sparking violent protests.

The opening is significant for India and for the BJP as it's emblematic of the increasing influence of Hindu-nationalist politics under Modi's government.

Ahead of the opening of the temple, thousands of Hindu devotees danced in packed streets on Sunday in Ayodhya as blaring loudspeakers played hymns and religious songs.

A video of the incident has surfaced on the internet and the video shows that the woman was tied to a tree, her hair chopped-off and face blackened with black ink. The woman was also thrashed in front of her son and daughters due to her love affair with a younger man from the village.

Cracks in the white marble façade of the Taj Mahal have prompted claims that a key ally of India’s Hindu nationalist prime minister is allowing the jewel of Muslim art to fall into disrepair.

Now, however, a series of photos highlighted on social media have fuelled concerns that the Taj Mahal, which is visited by about eight million people a year, is crumbling. These include a leaking dome, cracks in the walls and a tree sprouting from a pillar.

Damage caused by airborne pollution has also long been a concern, said the BBC. Environmentalists have been "particularly concerned" about a major oil refinery 30 miles away from the Taj Mahal emitting sulphur dioxide and other pollutants, which combine with moisture in the atmosphere to cause corrosive rain.

The tree spotted emerging from a pillar at the Taj Mahal is a peepul, a variety of fig considered sacred by Hindus – symbolic, for those pointing the finger of blame for the monument's decline on the growing influence of Hindu extremists.

There is a "pervasive influence" of Hindu nationalism in the "highest echelons" of Indian politics, said La Croix, and "an intent to establish a Hindu hegemony at the expense of religious minorities", a policy known as Hindutva.

Some Hindu fringe groups have "set their sights" on the Taj Mahal, which they believe that was built on the site of a shrine to the Hindu deity Shiva, said France24. "It was destroyed by Mughal invaders so that a mosque could be built there," Sanjay Jat, spokesman for the organisation Hindu Mahasabha, told the news website.

Northeast India: Deadly Tensions Between Hindus and Christians

Manipur State (India) has declared a curfew as religious and ethnic rivalries erupt between Hindus and Christians, against a backdrop of increasing immigration from neighboring Myanmar, where Christian populations are fleeing their country's bloody civil war.

In this northeastern part of India, a conflict is taking place behind closed doors, pitting the Meitei—the dominant Hindu ethnic group, representing around 53% of the local population—against the Kuki-Zo, a Christian ethnic group estimated to make up 41% of Manipur's 3.2 million inhabitants.

This ancestral rivalry has given rise to renewed violence over the past year and a half, since a local court, challenging the advantages given to the Kuki-Zo ethnic group on account of its minority status, decided to give equivalent rights to the Meitei, who are favored by their dominant position.

Since May 2023, violence has claimed more than 230 lives—most of them Kuki-Zo—60,000 people have been forced into exile and more than 300 churches have been burnt down. The Christians accused the Hindus of wanting “to ‘wipe off even the traces’ of their existence.”

One thing remains certain: the Christians of Manipur have not finished paying the price for conflicts combining geopolitics, religion, and ethnic rivalries.
