Curfew set in Indian city after Hindu groups demand demolition of Muslim ruler’s tomb

Clashes between Hindus and Muslims in Maharashtra state’s Nagpur city broke out on Monday during a protest led by Hindu nationalist groups demanding the demolition of the tomb of Aurangzeb, a Muslim Mughal ruler who has been dead for more than 300 years.

Lawmaker Chandrashekhar Bawankule said at least 34 police personnel and five other people were injured and several houses and vehicles were damaged during the violence. Senior police office Ravinder Singal said at least 50 people have been arrested so far.

Devendra Fadnavis, Maharashtra’s top elected official, said the violence began after “rumors were spread that things containing religious content were burnt” by the protesters, referring to the Quran.

Aurangzeb is a loathed figure among India’s Hindu nationalists, who accuse him of persecuting Hindus during his rule in the 17th century, even though some historians say such stories are exaggerated.

As tensions between Hindus and Muslims have mounted under Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi, scorn for Aurangzeb has grown. Modi has made references to Aurangzeb in the past, accusing him of persecuting Hindus.

Such remarks have led to anxieties among the country’s significant Muslim minority who in recent years have been at the receiving end of violence from Hindu nationalists, emboldened by a prime minister who has mostly stayed mum on such attacks since he was first elected in 2014.

While there have long been tensions between India’s majority Hindu community and Muslims, rights groups say that attacks against minorities have become more brazen under Modi. They also accuse Modi of discriminatory policies towards the country’s Muslims.

In recent years, the Hindutva Right and BJP leaders have often used “puncturewalla”, a colloquial term for someone who repairs tyre punctures, as a slur against working-class Muslims in India.

On Monday (April 14), Prime Minister Narendra Modi ostensibly criticised the Congress party’s policies regarding the Waqf Board and said, “If it had been used as per its purpose, then today, my Muslim youth would not have had to spend their lives fixing punctures on bicycles.”

Since his days as Gujarat’s chief minister, Modi has made a series of controversial statements about Muslims that have drawn widespread criticism for furthering anti-Muslim hatred and deepening communal divides in the country. His most notorious Islamophobic remarks include calling Muslims “infiltrators”, mocking their family size, referring to relief camps as “baby-producing centres” and repeatedly using dog whistles to vilify the community.

Modi often uses coded language, but the intent and target are widely recognised by his supporters, analysts and even victims.

Modi has often used indirect language and dog whistles, such as references to “appeasement”, “vote bank politics”, “Mughals” (historical Muslim rulers) and “outsiders”, to suggest Muslims are disloyal or a threat to the Hindu majority.

According to a Human Rights Watch report, Modi made anti-Muslim remarks in at least 110 out of 173 speeches during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, wrongly accusing the opposition of favouring Muslims and fostering fear among Hindus through disinformation.

Crowd crush at temple in India’s Goa kills 6, injures dozens

At least six people have been killed and about 80 others were injured in a crowd crush at a temple in the western Indian state of Goa where tens of thousands of Hindu worshippers had assembled, officials said.

The incident happened on Friday night as thousands of devotees thronged narrow lanes leading to the Hindu temple in Goa’s Shirgao village, some 40km (24 miles) from the state capital of Panaji.

People had gathered during the annual Shri Lairai Zatra festival at the Sree Lairai Devi temple, which is popular for events including firewalking rituals, during which devotees walk barefoot over a bed of burning coals to seek blessings.

People standing on a slope near the temple fell over, pushing more people to fall onto each other, Director General of Police Alok Kumar said.

Deadly crushes occur regularly at religious festivals across India, where large crowds often gather in small areas.

In January, at least 30 people were killed and many more were injured as tens of thousands of Hindus rushed to bathe in a sacred river at India’s massive Maha Kumbh festival, the world’s largest religious gathering, in the northern Uttar Pradesh state.

In July last year, at least 116 people died, most of them women and children, when a crowd of thousands at a religious gathering in northern India surged at a tent camp in Hathras town in the same state.

Hindu vs. Muslim Honor Killings

Honor killing is the premeditated murder of a relative (usually a young woman) who has allegedly impugned the honor of her family. It tends to predominate in societies where individual rights are circumscribed by communal solidarities, patriarchal authority structures, and intolerant religious and tribal beliefs. Under such conditions, control over marriage and reproduction is critical to the socioeconomic status of kinship groups and the regulation of female behavior is integral to perceptions of honor, known as maryada in many Indian languages and as ghairat in Urdu and Pashto.

In such an environment, a woman who refuses to enter into an arranged marriage, seeks a divorce, or fails to avoid suspicion of immoral behavior will be viewed by her family as having dishonored them so grievously that her male relatives will be ostracized and her siblings will have trouble finding suitable spouses. Killing her is the only way the family can restore its honor, regardless of whether she actually is or can be proven guilty of the alleged offense. In sharp contrast to other forms of domestic violence, honor killings are frequently performed out in the open, and the perpetrators rarely act alone.

According to Hindu religious law and tradition, marrying or having sexual relations with a member of a different caste is strictly forbidden. So, too, is romantic involvement with someone from the same sub-caste (gotra), a proscription that contrasts notably with Muslim cultures where first cousin marriage is widely accepted. The vast majority of Hindu honor killings target young Indians suspected of violating one of these two commandments. In northern India, the murders are often explicitly sanctioned or even mandated by caste-based councils known as khap panchayats.

Although the Hindu Marriage Act of 1955 made inter-caste and intra-gotra marriages legal, both remain unacceptable to the large majority of Indian Hindus. According to a 2006 survey, 76 percent of the Indian public oppose inter-caste marriage. In some areas of the country, any marriage not arranged by the family is widely regarded as taboo. “Love marriages are dirty … only whores can choose their partners,” one council leader told an Indian reporter.

Although Islam does not specifically endorse killing female family members, some honor killings involve allegations of adultery or apostasy, which are punishable by death under Shari’a (Islamic law). Thus, the belief that women who stray from the path can be rightly murdered is consistent with such Islamic teachings. The refusal of most Islamic authorities to unambiguously denounce the practice (as opposed to merely denying that Islam sanctions it) only encourages would-be honor killers.

It is difficult to accurately estimate the number of honor killings that take place in Pakistan and India as the vast majority are believed to go unreported. In 2010, there were roughly 900 reported honor killings in the northern Indian states of Haryana, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh alone while 100-300 additional honor killings took place in the rest of the country. Also in 2010, according to the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, 800 women were killed for honor in Pakistan. Both figures likely represent only the tip of the iceberg.

In India’s deportation drive, Muslim men recount being tossed into the sea

Thousands of people, most of them Muslims, who have had their lives upended by the Indian government after an April attack by militants killed 26 people in the Himalayan vacation town of Pahalgam, in Indian-administered Kashmir. As sectarian tensions swelled across India, Gujarat’s home minister, Harsh Sanghavi, pledged to root out “each and every infiltrator.”

Officials ordered raids in slums populated by Muslim laborers, branding most of those detained as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh who posed a threat to national security. While some of those targeted lacked legal status, many appeared to be Indian citizens; others were legal residents after living in the country for decades, family members said.

The deportation drive targeting India’s Muslim minority was marked by mass home demolitions, arbitrary detentions, allegations of beatings and a lack of due process, according to interviews with Bangladeshi officials and more than 50 people swept up in the dragnet, as well as a Post review of government data, court documents and video footage.

The crackdown — led by police, cheered by local leaders and blessed by the courts — was most severe in the northeastern Assam state and the western state of Gujarat. Both are governed by politicians from the Bharatiya Janata Party, the right-wing Hindu nationalist party led by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Between May 7 and July 3, 1,880 people were deported from India to Bangladesh, according to private Bangladeshi government data obtained by The Post. Between May 7 and June 17, 110 people were logged by border officials in Bangladesh as Indians who were wrongly deported and sent back, a separate document showed. It is unclear how many claimed Indian citizenship or residency but lacked the documentation to prove it.

Since India achieved independence in 1947, the country’s Muslims have faced persecution, prejudice and discrimination, according to human rights groups. Now making up an estimated 15 percent of the population, Muslims have routinely been demonized by right-wing Hindu politicians during moments of domestic turmoil, labeled infiltrators, and subjected to mass arrests, property destruction and police brutality.

Ahmedabad city workers bulldozed some 12,500 homes in Chandola Lake, according to municipal officials, leaving thousands of families homeless.

“The public opinion is: ‘They are keeping Muslims in line,’” he said.

Regardless of whether or not the deportees are citizens, the methods used by India to ship them off — without an official treaty of deportation with Bangladesh or time for due process — are a violation of international law, said Rudabeh Shahid, a nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council and an expert on South Asian immigration issues. The coordinated nature of the campaign, she added, beginning with home demolitions and arrests and culminating in beatings and forced expulsions, makes one thing clear.

“You want a whole group to disappear,” Shahid said. “I have no other ways to describe this.”

KFC-eating YouTuber mocks ISKCON devotees in London: Deliberate act of Kafirophobia exposes deep Anti-Hindu hate

This was no accident. The entire incident appears to have been premeditated. The YouTuber walked into the ISKCON-run vegetarian restaurant with a bag of chicken from KFC, set up a camera, and began eating meat right at the counter fully aware that ISKCON strictly follows and promotes a sattvic, meat-free lifestyle in accordance with Vaishnava Hindu values.

What turned this from a violation into a hate act was his next move offering meat to Krishna devotees and recording their reactions. This wasn’t just a stunt for likes or a misguided prank. It was a calculated attempt to mock Hindu beliefs, provoke devotees, and test the limits of tolerance.

Vinod Bansal, National Spokesperson of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), took to X, to express outrage over the incident, “Such misdeeds are not only an attack on Hindu sentiments but also a matter of behaving with dignity in someone else’s space,” said Bansal. “Will Mayor Sadiq Khan’s London Police act or let London continue its descent into ‘Londonistan’?”

Imagine the roles reversed. Had someone walked into a halal-only Islamic restaurant or a kosher Jewish space and consumed pork or beef on camera, the backlash — and media coverage — would have been immediate and fierce. Yet, in this case, mainstream British media and so-called secular watchdogs have remained conspicuously silent. Such acts are increasingly being viewed not as isolated incidents, but as symptoms of a growing intolerance against Hindus, often brushed aside under labels like “harmless prank” or “creative freedom.”

The video has triggered strong reactions from social media users, who have called it a blatant disrespect of the restaurant’s spiritual and cultural values. Amid calls for action against the man, several users also questioned why the Hindus did not stand up for themselves.

“Hindus can run away from India but will still get pushed around. We need to have shatrubodh and community unity. Then push back strongly,” a user said, adding, “Hindus have to act rough and tough.”

“This is the problem with Hinduism. Your benevolence is being taken as weakness,” said another user.

Another added, “Anyone can come and insult the religion, why can’t Hindus stand up for themselves and form a deep state of their own in the US just like the Jews did to influence US policies and decision making?”

“So why did not the COWARDLY HINDUS give him a SOUND THRASHING, eh?” asked an angry netizen.

“Walking into a temple canteen with chicken isn’t rebellion — it’s cultural illiteracy served with zero self-respect,” another added.

A few users also used Lord Krishna references while calling for an action against the man.

“Devotees should follow Lord Krishna's policy. Namely, being nice to sādhus, and kicking butt of all such dushtas. This blanket unconditional humility and submissiveness didn't work in Dwāpara, and definitely won't work in Kaliyuga. (It didn't work in Tretā either, btw)” a user said.

“Slit his throat right there. Even LORD Shri Krishna said... If they want WAR give them WAR,” added another.

A user also claimed that the act was purely done for a few likes on social media, and said, “These are insects in the society, doing anything to get engagement on social media and look cool. This is a virus that is going to destroy generations to come.”
