Really? I didn't know that.Compared with where?

It's hard to compare authoritarianism these days since all countries are increasingly authoritarian. However our laws concerning free speech are getting ridiculous. Last year 2 men were sentenced to 4 years in jail for encouraging people to riot on social networking sites. They didn't do any rioting themselves, and there is no way of knowing if their words actually encouraged anyone who wasn't going to riot anyway.

IMO, the only proper way to handle free speech is to actually have free speech. No form of speech should be banned. The law should recognise the difference between having an opinion and having an intention. If someone has the opinion that all gay people should be killed, that's their opinion and they are entitled to it. If someone has the intention of killing all gay people, they should be arrested for conspiracy to murder.

The rising irreligion in Britain is pleasing, but the widespread popularity of 'Alternative' medicine (i.e. methods of healing that are backed up with no scientific evidence, things like chanting, drinking 'special' water, sleeping underneath 'special' lights etc.) is stupidly high.

I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

When was the last time you took a look at our republican congressmen? But you're right, we weren't forced to do such a thing..although I think that might make our current situation even worse.....

True. We have seen the enemy and he is us.

In psychology they call this symptom substitution.
I have studied the Bible and the theology behind Christianity for many years. I have been to many churches. I have walked the depth and the breadth of the religion and, as a result of this, I have a lot of bullshit to scrape off the bottom of my shoes. ~Ziploc Surprise

Britain is the best place in the world.

I'd rather die than live in the bible belt.
You are currently experiencing a lucky and very brief window of awareness, sandwiched in between two periods of timeless and utter nothingness. So why not make the most of it, and stop wasting your life away trying to convince other people that there is something else? The reality is obvious.

I live in the Bible Belt. It's not that bad here in NC - not as bad as some places. At least not in the Queen City.

Pad -

According to my coworker, who lives in the backwoods, I don't have a southern accent. According to my friends from 300 miles north, and friends who live across the country on the west coast, I most certainly do. Tiberius and Ryft find immense pleasure in making me talk about Wal-Mart or getting me upset, because supposedly it gets thicker then. I guess it's relative. If I'm talking to non-Southern people, it tends to go away, as I was raised in an area that had no real identifiable accent at all. If my roommate and I are jawing over something and getting worked up, I sound like I'm from Mississippi.

I try not to say "y'all" unless I'm in friendly company but it does slip out.

You do, you absolutely do. It's subdued, usually, because you have an acceptable level of education, lol. Sometimes it is not, because you have a rich cultural and linguistic heritage. Yall isn't just a simple misinterpretation (ha, you even punctuate your yalls......).

Which does not include southern parents, so it's entirely due to my "immersion". I'm even starting to like tea... [icky face].
