They might be getting paid... But commissaries are closed on bases in the US. That's where many military families get their food and supplies. Also, military personnel will be treated at on-base medical facilities, but their families won't. Isn't that just a wonderful way of thanking them for their service? You get paid, but you have to go elsewhere to get food and medical attention for your sick wife and/or kids! And they wouldn't even be getting paid if Obama hadn't signed an order for that to happen.

Unlike Cato, I don't think you're part of the problem. However AAFES(commissary) is still open and unless things have changed since my time in uniform, military dependents have access to military medical staff.

A shutdown is still bullshit, even if evidence of areas still unaffected abound. The republican'ts own the lion's share on this.

According to jackass Airheadman, the democrats are responsible.

Let's just disregard the horrific compromise of ObamaCare to embrace the GOP approved RomneyCare, the debt ceiling crisis, the concerted effort to sequester, the Bush Years rhetoric and marginalization of Democrats in favor of the Republicans...

Nope, all democrats.

Yes Airyaman -- you are part of the fucking problem.

By refusing to recognize the concept of being reciprocal.

You call down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind.

You're part of the problem if you think anything you said is true.
Yup, I'm totally psycho:
http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/Mi...28931.html
I have a neighbor who is in the Navy, and works at the Pentagon. His wife and I chatted while picking up kids from school. She's the one who told me on-base families would not be treated at on-base medical facilities, but soldiers would.
According to this: http://m.jdnews.com/news/military/govern...s-1.211405 Emergency and urgent care facilities will be up and running (with civilian staff being promised to be retroactively paid). They will also take previously made appointments, but will not be scheduling appointments for future dates. So my initial statement was a bit off, but not completely if this government shutdown continues for a significant length of time.

I am interested to see if the GOP sees this through or caves. If GOP are doing this they have to go all the way or it will reflect poorly on them, if Obama backs off Dems will lose White house in 2016, IMO. I don't see how the Rep can pull this off, but time will tell.

They won't be able to pu it off. There are more than enough to vote for a clean bill. Eventual when they are ready they can force a vote for it in the house if they have the balls to go against the house speaker.

If the Republican Party wants to survive, it will need to disavow the TeaTurds.

Agreed. Speaker Boner will have to go in order to end this.

The climate in DC is really weird right now Undecided Lots of people are just sitting at home waiting for Congress to make a move. EPA workers are off, NIH... Pretty much all of the alphabet soup people.

RE: Federal Government Shutdown
Okay, here are my thoughts. As many of you know I am an ordinary member of a political party here in Australia.

We have compulsory voting in Australia, and it is of utmost importance in a democracy to have it.

The USA claims to be a democracy, but lacks mandatory voting, so you see the parties representing the views of their supporters; and their supporters are voting citizens, and as a result of having non-mandatory voting, the poor and underprivileged are the people least likely to vote; and thus the rich are the ones who have their wishes appeased.

The USA has a huge problem with Federal government debt. They don't so much have such a large problem with State government debts (although there are obviously examples of States that are an exception to this generalization). The figure that most people hear presently is that the USA has USD 16.7 Trillion in public debt - this is totally incorrect, that figure is the federal government debt only. The total public debt in the USA (federal/state/local) is closer to USD 22 Trillion, yet you almost never hear this quoted as the "US public debt" figure!

China owns about 1.3 Trillion of the federal debt, Japan owns about 1.1 Trillion. Think about this, if China decided to liquidate their bonds, what would happen? Would the USA really be able to find investors for 1.3 Trillion overnight, or would money be printed and the economy go into spiralling inflation and interest rate rises? What about if Japan wanted to liquidate their bonds?

So like the wealthy US citizens that vote, China and Japan also have to be listened to by the government as they are, if you will, the primary shareholders of the USA. Between them, they can prevent the USA taking military action against countries they consider allies (eg North Korea), or they can strongarm them into taking military action against countries that they consider enemies. The USA has no problem taking military action against countries for fiscal reasons, for instance Iraq.

So when I hear Yanks go on blaming one of the two major parties, I simply laugh. Why should your children's children be the ones paying for your current government and your current lifestyle?? Well, if you have a government in the USA right now, today, they're the ones that are going to be paying the bill for you. It's fucking disgusting. And if China, or Japan were to liquidate their bonds, then your grandchildren would have a lifetime of total financial depression to look forward to.

So think twice next time you assume that the "debt ceiling" should be raised.

Here’s a course of action the USA desperately needs to take: 1. raise federal government taxes, 2. reduce spending, 3. Lower the debt ceiling annually, 4. repeat indefinitely until federal government debt repaid.

The WIN/Gallup End of Year Survey 2013 found the US was perceived to be the greatest threat to world peace by a huge margin, with 24% of respondents fearful of the US followed by: 8% for Pakistan, and 6% for China. This was followed by 5% each for: Afghanistan, Iran, Israel, North Korea. -LINK

"That's disgusting. There were clean athletes out there that have had their whole careers ruined by people like Lance Armstrong who just bended thoughts to fit their circumstances. He didn't look up cheating because he wanted to stop, he wanted to justify what he was doing and to keep that continuing on." - Nicole Cooke

Good luck getting the wealthy to agree to higher taxes...or more accurately, their paid puppets in congress. Fuck'm all(but me) is their mantra.
