Short stories isn't my favourite medium but Alastair Reynolds' Diamond Dogs is memorable.

Oh wait, I know a few more I read in English class that I liked. The Lottery (which was made into a movie), and The Yellow Wallpaper (also a movie). And in the novella category, Carmilla, a lesbian vampire story which predates Dracula and is way better. Carmilla can turn into a motherfucking panther. It's awesome.
