We don't punish people for crimes they may commit, someday. At least, that's what we like to tell ourselves.

How is it that addicts OD all the time, doctors accidentally kill people all the time, but when prisons are actually trying to kill someone, they have such a hard time with it?

Perhaps they're trying to hard?

How about locking them up and putting them to work (not slavery, but rational ethical work) to pay for debts? It costs less and brings greater advantages.
Putting them to work would give them more opportunity to escape than just keeping them in a cell. I mean the kind of people I would say deserve death are the kind of people who do things you just can't fathom a real Human being doing.

If they have done it then a real human can do it, it's that simple. I don't accept the argument that criminals lose their humanity and rights because of their actions, as long as you are biologically born as a part of the human species, you'll keep your rights and your humanity until you die, that's how it works, we can't just create a special category of people and say 'these people are not humans'. Opportunity to escape? I find the argument of prisoners escaping insufficient, sure you could say any prisoner is capable of running away, but dangerous convicts are usually sent to a maximum security prison, we'd find a way to make them work there and pay for their staying and the compensation to the victim/reparation of damage done to society. Again it's not slavery, they won't lose rights, they'll just be put to work within human beings' physical limits.
I kinda favor the German system for punishing criminals, it works like this - The maximum of years in prison is 15. However you need to rehabilitate yourself, it is not an option, and when the time ends you have to be evaluated by a professional. Simply putting it, if you are still dangerous, you'll stay 5 more years, and so on, you could even stay in jail for your whole life, even though the limit is 15 years there is a certain flexibility to adapt to those who can rehabilitate and those who can't.

Maybe real wasn't the proper word, but I just think there are people who just shouldn't be allowed to remain in society. I realize it's quite the controversial subject, but I just don't think that we should do away with the idea completely. Just keep it around as an extreme measure for extreme circumstances.

If life in jail is cheaper, why allow the death penalty? At least less taxes would be paid.

Well for one I don't think the death penalty should be as expensive as it is. Second I just don't think life imprisonment is the right thing to do with the worst people in the world. Even if you give them life, chances are they'd have to be kept separate so the inmates don't kill them like they did with Jeffrey Dahmer. If you're not planning to let them out, and keeping them in mostly solitary confinement so they don't get killed or kill themselves, you might as well kill them.

I'd like to hear your proposal on reducing the costs of the death penalty. Changing the method of execution won't be enough. And cutting salaries is usually not a good measure

Reduce the egregious number of appeals. I realize that death is permanent, and we do sometimes make mistakes, but the process just goes too far. Sentencing someone to death should not cost more than sitting them in prison for 50+ years. That's rediculous.
