On the crap going on in Israel/Palestine/Hamas?

Literally all I know is that brown people in the eastern Mediterranean are blowing each other up. I feel so lost when people talk about this. Help a brother out.

First off - What the hell is "Palestine" anyway? A nation-state by Israel? A city in Israel? Another name for Israel? And who are Palestinians? Are they Jews? Muslims? A mix?

Secondly - What is Hamas? It's just a Muslim sect? Are they state sanctioned? And if so, by what state?

Third - why are these guys fighting? Who started it, and why? Is it only religious fervor, or is it more about territory/resources?

Fourth - who does the US government tend to support, and how?

Fifth - could this bullshit spread and suck in other powers?

I am for a secular pluralistic state based on common law, but I will never be for any type of government constitution that sets up social pecking orders based on religion, anymore than I like it when Christians in America like stupidly claiming we are a "Christian nation".

Israel is not blameless in this. Both Palestine and Israel suffer from religious nationalism and until religion is taken out of their respective politics this shit will not stop. For anyone claiming on either side that this has nothing to do with religion is lying their ass off.

I have a doubt, isn't Isreal already considered a State and recognized as such? So why this conflict? And do they want a normal secular State (first world) or a jewish theocracy?

Both sides are being ruled by assholes, but there are secular pluralists in both populations, just simply not enough to change things. We are not a separate species which is what humans in general forget because of nationalism and religion. It is gang think.
