Yes, I've seen this happen several times, sometimes to me, and sometimes to others. Someone will enter a new thread ONLY and with the clear purpose of "warning" others what kind of person they're debating-- even though the accused has done none of thing things in the current thread that bothered the warner in the past.
I think the rule should be that someone upon newly entering a thread should be expected to contribute to THAT thread. In other words, they should either respond to the OP, or demonstrate that they are aware of at least the last couple pages of the thread. Of course, if you're deep in a thread and someone starts pulling out shitty arguments, it should be fine again to say, "There goes Johnny, the closet theist poe, with his old BS again" or whatever. But you shouldn't enter the thread, see that Johnny is involved, and declare, "Look out guys, this fucker's going to start quoting the Bible soon, so don't expect a decent debate," when Johnny may in fact be making a deliberate effort already not to do that in this thread.

Would this rule also cover things like we've seen in the 'what is good' thread? Like Huggy detailing entire threads by quoting others out of context as 'proof' of their perceived dishonesty. That would be useful, because it gets in the way of on topic discussion and puts the misquoted person in an awkward position

I think that's what the reference is here. I personally would be relieved if this rule was expanded because a certain person has quoted me using the same two quotes, more than three times now. He does it when there's absolutely no reason to do so and I think he's being abusive in that it lets him get away with too much, regarding that rule. Both quotes he uses of mine were from two completely different threads, yet he tries to misrepresent their actual meanings all the time. The rule, as it stands the way it is now, lets individuals bully other people and get away with it - at least where this issue goes.
I'm in favor of a rule change. Honestly, if anything, to stop the bullshit. When misquoting someone, dragging up irrelevant quotes and intentionally misusing them in order make a point is done on a regular basis and it derails the thread topic, the person needs to be sent a message that this won't be tolerated.
TBH, I'm getting tired of the redundancy that's used and no one stepping in and taking action aside from saying saying enough is enough. I have to defend myself in other aspects of my life. Clearly, if someone is bullying someone else in this manner, something other than the statement of "we need to get this thread back on topic" or the like would be helpful. Like a suspension or banning all together if the offender keeps doing it.

Trolling, spamming, and failure to engage in conversation are all covered under the rules, you guys. If you find yourselves in situations you feel are unfair, report them! If you find someone else is in an unfair position, report the problem!
This forum is fair and open, and I honestly think that if we actually start adding more and more rules, everyone's going to be unhappy.

I forgot it's also covered by 'quoting others adequately' rule.
And I don't think you could really call that bullying, just being a big dishonest melonhead.

I think any of these things could be covered by rule 4, no trolling. It's down to the staff to discern what constitutes as trolling anyway, I don't see how it's not already covered. Like Bex says, if you have a problem with what someone is doing, report it. Often you might think someone's trolling, and they may well be, but if you don't report it then the staff aren't likely to see it, much less take action on it.

Go read a significant proportion of Huggy74's posts. He makes regular use of this tactic in order undermine a thread.

Nap, I did. Reported for trolling and calling out. I was told it wasn't calling out and that "a certain amount of trolling is allowed." Not criticizing, just explaining what has prompted me to ask for an expansion of the rules. Hell, I'd be happy with modifying to rule to state "No calling out by starting a new thread" instead of "No calling out."
As I've said, if you guys want to leave the rules as-is, I have no problem with it. If someone gets to offensive to me, I know where the ignore button is. But, I do think calling out is calling out regardless of whether or not they're starting a thread to do it.

I'm not on staff anymore so take what I say with a pinch of salt. I didn't get to see the reports you made.
Personally I think making it against the rules to even reference other members in threads they're not involved in, is... well to be blunt, rather stupid.
Starting a thread is a bit of a different scenario to just posting the occasional trolling reference/snipe. Starting a thread to call out is to make an entire discussion about one particular person, and it puts them in a really horrible position. I've done it to people before myself (stupidly) and it's several degrees worse than just making the odd comment. Ofcourse, if someone is going round several threads just to take snipes at others, then again, that's really covered by the trolling rule.
As it is, the current rules simply says:
Quote:Do not any create threads that call out a specific member. Calling out is whenever someone creates a thread that is aimed at a specific member in order to insult him, complain about him, and/or to put him in a awkward position such as by challenging his views or even by asking him questions.
I think it's already pretty clear that calling out refers to making threads.
