Also true of dead presidents, lol.

Probably less true when they were put on money in the first place, though.

You do it for postage stamps, you could do it for coins and banknotes.

Up here we do that. Just two examples.

Good idea - with one big drawback.

The BIG reason to keep bills the same - is to help spot counterfit bills.

When you get a new bill - with a new look - how do you know it came from the Treasury?

That's the stupidest thing I have ever heard

1. Keeping the bill the same is no defense against counterfeiting. American 20s are counterfeited all the time.

2. New bills means new opportunities to update security features.

Besides the fact that there’s a shitton of measures the US Treasury takes to make it really fucking hard to pull off counterfeiting, from the unique 75% cotton/25% linen composition of the paper to the shitton of watermarks (from the weird colourings that have appeared on everything $5 and up since 2008 to the ultraviolet fluorescent strips included in everything above $5 since 1990) that they put on these bills?

Yeah, I can see how we wouldn't want all those illegitimate tubmans diluting our pure pool of legal tender.

Like they did with the 20 - in 98, and again in 03

Quote:

  • September 24, 1998: The Series 1996 $20 note was completely redesigned for the first time since 1929 to further deter counterfeiting; the picture of the White House was changed from the south side to the north side view. A larger, off-center portrait of Jackson was used on the front, and several anti-counterfeiting features were added, including color-shifting ink, microprinting, and a watermark. The plastic strip now reads "USA 20" and glows green under a black light.[9] The bills were first printed in June 1998.[10]

  • October 9, 2003:[11] The current series of 20 dollar bills is released with light background shading in green and yellow, and no oval around Andrew Jackson's portrait (background images of eagles, etc. were also added to the front); the back is the same view of the White House, but without the oval around it. Ninety faint "20"s are scattered on the back in yellow as a "EURion constellation" to prevent photocopying. The first issue's series date is 2004 with Marin-Snow signatures. The bills were first printed in April 2003.

It was a high traffic note, it never made it more than a decade or so without redesigns. The current state is the longest it's ever gone without one - which is to say...they were going to release a new one anyway. If a person really cared, they could very easily find all the public documentation as to how tubman made it to candidacy.

OLB went from

"Why does Harriet deserve it"

To, "What about that Russian guy who saved humanity from nuclear war"?

To, "If paper money changes how will we know they are counterfeit?" And he damned well knows, just like coins change, paper currency has also always shifted in looks over the years. And counterfeiting is extremely rare and the Secret Service and FBI are damned good at tracking it the rare times it does happen.

So watch, he'll go right back to, "Why does Harriet deserve it?'

If somebody gave a straight answer to "why" we wouldn't have to go through all this.

I never expect straight answers.

You won't admit the "why".
