Initially man was created in the image of God; God chose to form woman from man as an extension of this creation, not as a separate entity.
Woman was designed to complement man, as a companion for man. I believe the term used is "suitable helper", equals. There is nothing subservient or second class citizen about it.
This concept is also reflected in the marriage covenant between husband and wife.
