My guess is that this is just slamming people who support the confederate flag, not a real quest for understanding someone else's culture. There seems to be this frightening celebration of not knowing or not understanding things that has been going on lately. "I don't understand all these ....." (Trump supporters, college students, millennials, etc etc) as though not understanding other people is some sort of virtue. Now I'm not from the south, so I'm not really qualified. Nor do I have strong feelings about the confederate flag, as I'm not black either. So I don't really think about it that much, however giving the benefit of the doubt that this is really a quest for understanding and not a quest to have other people validate his opinion, here is the best documentary I've seen on it.
