This is messed up.
On the one hand, those folk who stood up for the girls were heroes.
But, on the other hand, they're dead, which is something that will weight heavily next time someone thinks of standing up for somebody else.
In a way, it is terrorism. The grand majority of people, all the decent folk, will now fear going against such hateful idiots.
