I gotta agree that I think non academic activities are highly important, unless what you want to teach your kid is to hate school. Some kids, Hermione-esc, do wonderfully on academics alone, but most need some social breaks. Arent there even studies showing how breaks, for kids and adults, increase productivity?
Anyway, my kids old school also canceled Halloween activities during school hours, the reason given when I asked for details was that not everyone celebrates it and also that it often leaves out the poorer kids, whos parents dont have time or money to make costumes.
P,s, I also went as a hobo one year around age 8. This would've been in the mid 80s. My kid can go as what she likes, everything will offend someone, no point worrying unless its obviously a negative stereotype.
No costumes for us this year. You have no idea how hard it is for me. I put sooo much effort into my families costumes. My husband has a lined English duster i sewed for either western or steampunk themes. He actually made it work as Papa Legba one year. His backup costume is a Howie Lab coat i designed with no pattern, for Dr. Horrible or other mad scientists look. Ive got so many more, too. Hmmm. We need a Halloween costumes past and present thread!
