Who do you think is worried about sanctuary cities that don't exist......? LOL< it;s an appeal to racists. Racists are voters too. I'm sure..that in a political strategists mind, they want to appeal to the voter, not necessarily the racist....but it's not like you can wrench the one out of the other.
If Northam had pledged to protect "our heritage", who would he be appealing to? Statue enthusiasts?
Politicians (and american politics in general) are in a tough spot. They need the votes, I'm sure that many politicians would rather not have to appeal to bigots to get them..but massaging their bigoted fears perpetuates the dilemma they find themselves in by legitimizing those bigoted fears in the first place.
