The educated spoke and wrote greek it was like the universal base as the greek a few hundred years back conquered the whole world so their influence was their language and writing. Romans spoke latain but the empire was divided by region. there was a push to translate everything to latin and have everyone speak it, but at this time they were mid change, and the near and far east spoke aramaic (primitive language) but still also spoke and recorded in koine' greek. as all other written languages were frowned upon. even the hebrew bible had to be in koine greek. so we do not have any old old hebrew bibles left.
