Abraham decides to help God along in his promise...
Some time passes between the promise God made and the sacrifice abraham made to God about 10 years and sarai Mrs. Ham says to mr ham it is past time for me to have children and I know God promised you to be a father of a nation of people. it was obvious to her God was not going to use her so she offered abe her slave. Abe is not recorded to have object and by the net result went along with the plan. hagar the slave had a son!.. Now this emboldened the save and she started to treat the wife badly. God reminded the wife that the slave was just a slave and her could indeed fight back. meaning in that time even a first wife was superceeded by the wife who boar the first son (pecking order of wives). So again God said she was not his wife but a slave so Sarai treated her badly and the slave hauled off with the unborn boy...
Or hagar finds out that she will have a boy by an angel she meets while camped out under some trees.. he tells her who this boy is (ishmael) and because he is of Mr. Ham, he too will spawn a nation, but one the opposite of his 1/2 brother to be from Sarai. Basically he and his children will oppose the sons of sarai. Then He convinces her to go home and work things out She see this intervention as God taking care of her and her son and calls God the "one that see me." even then direct interaction between God and man was rare.
She went home and gave birth to ishmael. Abe was 86.
