I'm a bit irritated with the way this is being covered because I think his motive was to incite hatred.
He wasn't just trying to get attention. He was trying to get people hurt.

I agree that he was probably trying to incite hated (though we can never know for sure), but how exactly do you expect it to be covered?
Now we can see Jussie Smollett was in full on performance mode during his ABC News interview with Robin Roberts...
