One person hoarding multiple properties prices out the poor. Manhattan and San Francisco both have enough vacant investment property to house their entire homeless populations. There needs to be massive reform for several reasons. The transition out of homelessness is very difficult. Working class jobs don’t cover rent. Homelessness is a public health issue. Property cannot be hoarded without severe consequences for the poor. People who are priced out of a community have no incentive not to destroy the place.
Ultimately the wealth gap is way too large but when we let it encroach on people’s access to shelter it becomes uniquely insidious.
America has the wealth and resources to provide universal nutrition, housing, and health care. Let’s do it!
