As an atheist living in a primarily christian community I can tell you that most christians assume that everyone around them is christian also. Because of that ignorance, unknowingly, they can often be irritating or offensive. When they do know that I'm atheist their behavior and our interactions often deteriorate.Yes, this could be very true. I typically don't go around asking people if they are Christian or atheist, so I can only speak about the two whom I personally know and speak with on this subject.
There are probably as many reasons why people are atheist as there are for being christian. I was raised christian until around age 13, then the illogical claims about the concept became apparent and I left.
I try not to treat anybody any differently because of their worldview. I do know individuals that do that though and it saddens me that they will disregard a person simply because they do not believe as we believe.
Yes! That is what I want to know. In Christianity, we call it our testimony and they vary from one end to the other. I want to hear your testimony! So, for example, you say that you were raised Christian until you were about 13 and that the illogical claims became apparent to you. If I may ask what denomination were you raised in and what claims became illogical to you? What really was the straw that broke the camel's back for you and how did your family respond to that?
Pro tip, "atheist" is NOT a worldview.
We are not sheep. We are as diverse in our nationalities, political views, economic views and skin tones as any other labels.
I know atheists who value the likes of Ayn Rand and vote Libertarian. I know other atheists who value the likes of Che, the guy who lead to Castro's Cuba. I don't like either of their economic/political views. And we also come from all the nations of the world. There are atheists in India, Africa, Mexico, Japan, Europe. There are black atheists, white atheists, rich atheists, and poor atheists. The only thing the word "atheist" means is "off" on claims of god/gods. Outside that we are just as diverse.
