To nativists....the cruelty, ambiguity, and impotency of our policies and those protections our law affords is the point. To have it as fucked up as possible is the goal. That, they imagine, will dissuade invaders. Thinking that you aren't responsible by law or imagining that the law didn't say so... just because you personally abandoned your duties in that regard with the blessing of your superiors... is too silly to comment any further on.
Ironically, the recent scotus decision stripping immigration policy of it's near-sacred character as the sole purview of the executive will probably end up doing more good than harm, even though it was intentionally made to cause further harm.
