The primary focus should be ending qualified immunity. Bad cops should be punished, and we all know there are bad cops. The cop culture needs to change as well and at the very top there are departments that thrive on abusing poor and minority communities. This is NOT my opinion, it is a matter of fact and has been reported on by many investigations. Policing does not and should not include corruption and brutality. A better force would be a more effective force. If you can't get behind that idea then you are just a dumbass.
Interesting reply with which I pretty much agree, although I could have done without the ad hominem. (tempting I know)
Oz has had its own scandals. An ongoing one is black deaths in custody***. From my experience the police force has a lot in common with the army. The same toxic macho culture with dogmatic , conservative ideas about society, male-female relationships and politics. I have no idea how that can be changed, but training isn't enough.
It's said you can't makes ilk purse from a sow's ear. As far as I can tell, neither the army nor the police forces anywhere attract the best and brightest. In fact a high IQ can be a disadvantage. Members need to follow orders and their training, not think about them.

Julius Sumner Miller. Gee , you must be as old as I. Very fond memories of his TV show. In Grade 7, I think, I did a class presentation based on things he'd taught. Got an A
Whenever I use the word curmudgeon I think of him, in the nicest possible way. That's two lifetimes away. Wouldn't want to relive them though. "Nostalgia ain't what it used to be and never was" (Tarquin S Shagnasty) Strangely, the happiest I've ever been apart from now was in the army. Hated the army but loved my job as a medic. I've never had a better job. At the time , I was too homesick to realise how happy I was.
