To put a personal touch on this subject, in the summer of 2020 my wife and daughter attended a peaceful BLM protest. A few hundred protesters showed up. There were speakers and a moment of prayer and the event was sanctioned with a permit. Police were at the event, waiting and watching. There were zero incidents of violence or vandalism. In fact my wife described the event as somewhat quiet and reserved.

At the scheduled end time, people were beginning to disperse but the area was not fully vacated. Police began firing tear gas canisters into the area where people were standing. This resulted in people running away more quickly but a few were apprehended by police.

I trust my wife when she tells me these protesters were not violent, not even any shouting. So why did police fire tear gas when nothing was going on?
