Maybe we believe that some people deserve to die, while we wield our righteous anger. The Christian message is that only God judges, and that all are sinners that can be saved. My own atheist belief is that all human life has value, and that killing won't bring back the dead nor truly act as a deterrent.
Yes, I think executions harm the U.S. moral ground on international human rights.
The rarified, alabster white..and unblemished moral ground of international human rights harmed by offing a few murderers and rapists? Difficult to see how.
In principle, ofc, I agree with you, that executions are antithetical to some idea of human rights - just not the prevalent idea on the ground. That gives us, perhaps, another piece of the explanation for why people concerned with human rights and who may think that executions aren't a great look still support or are ambivalent to the issue.
