Whataboutism is a term with a specific meaning. It involves deflecting against criticism not by addressing the other person’s objections, but by pointing out their (perceived or real) hypocrisy. Something like, for instance, claiming that the occasional BLM protest that turns violent is somehow an answer to any wrongdoing by the January 6th rioters.
One thing it doesn’t cover is pointing out another person’s plan has a stupefyingly simple loophole that can blow it wide open.
