We have waaay more restrictions on purchasing firearms that there was in the mid 1900s. But per capita these incidents have increased.
More of the same is not likely to work.
Time to try something else.
We have way more restrictions of purchasing just about everything since the 1900s..but perhaps the most salient change with respect to the state of gun control in the early 1900s and today is that in the early 1900s guns were blanket banned in public places in all but 7 states. A program to eliminate submachine guns would be so successful that by 1937 the state declared that the trade in that category of firearm had nearly ceased.
After the civil war ended gun manufacturers sought out new customers in the public - increasing the number of guns in private hands. Their wares became more capable, more reliable, easier to use, and less expensive. In living memory (and a bit before) they focused even more strenuously on marketing to defense (and the hellscape america that defense as a sales pitch needs). Additionally.... to children.
The latter trend continues to this day, but the former is fully reversed. There are more guns and less gun control than there were in the early 1900s...and in addition, we now actually count shooting black people a gun crime..which adds to the statistics. Gorrilla in the room....alot of these mass shooters are white supremacists who believe in hellscape america and use their legally purchased firearms (available in hot pink for the ladies or "2nd amendment" for the little boys to express their dementia. I'm glad all you do with yours is yell at strangers on the internet.
